The document discusses conflicting evidence on the impact of modular distance learning (MDL) on student academic performance. Two studies found that MDL had positive effects: it was more effective than traditional teaching methods, and it fulfilled diverse student needs by allowing self-paced learning. However, another study found that student performance declined after implementing MDL, possibly due to lack of teacher-student interaction and too many tasks in modules. The document concludes by noting the need to address student, parent and teacher needs to improve education delivery, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Analyzing Arguments Worksheet

The Modular Distance Learning Program has both positive and negative

effects on the academic performance of students.

Reason #1: A study has shown that modular teaching is a more effective approach

for teaching university students.

Evidence: Sadiq and Zamir (2014) found in their study that a modular approach to

teaching university students of Master in Educational Planning and Management is

more effective than other teaching methods. This method can be applied to other

fields and subjects as well as other levels of education because it fulfills the

diverse needs of students at all levels.

Reason #2: When compared to traditional teaching methods, modular teaching is

also more effective on university students in the teaching-learning process .

Evidence: Sadiq (2014) states in her study that modular teaching is more effective

than ordinary teaching methods on university students in terms of their success in

the classroom. This is because in modular classes students are able to learn at

own pace, rather than all at once.

Reason #3: A different study, however, showed that learner performance

decreased following the implementation of modular distance learning.

Evidence: According to findings from a study by Dargo and Dimas (2021), students'
academic performance declined after Modular Distance Learning (MDL) was put

into place. The researchers found that face-to-face teaching is more beneficial to

the learners than modular distance learning, which can only mean that face-to-face

teaching is more effective. Additionally, it was found that MDL had more

detrimental effects than beneficial ones. Respondents listed reasons why

students' learning is negatively impacted by modular distance learning, including a

lack of exchange between teachers and students and too many tasks included in

each module.

Conflicting Information: Previous arguments have determined the effectiveness

and shortcomings of modular distance learning (MDL). The following summarizes

the positive impacts on students who experienced new normal education: First, it

fulfills the diversified needs of learning for students of all levels. Second,

students learn at their own pace. Lastly, modularization promotes positive changes

in teaching style. However, some studies have shown that the negative impact of

modular distance learning can result in decreased academic performance of

students. Parents have claimed that time allotment to finish the learning tasks, too

many activities incorporated in the modules, less interaction between teachers and

learners, and educational attainment of parents are factors contributing to their

hard time as facilitators to their children.

What are some things you can do to solve the problem of conflicting

information?: In light of the health crisis affecting the Filipino nation, it is

important for every Filipino, especially local government officials, school

administrators, and Department of Education officials to address the needs of

students, parents and teachers in order to improve the delivery of education.
