Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
After completing this section, you should be
able to
Explain the Concept of electronic circuits and devices
Signals in electronics
Digital electronics concept
Areas where digital electronics is applied
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Electronic circuit
Is a continuous path consisting of components such as
resistors, transistors, capacitors, inductors and diodes
connected by conductors through which current can
flow.
Electronic circuit can not only exist in discrete but also
can exist as microscopic array of electronic circuit
(Integrated circuit) advantages
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Advantages of integrated circuits are:-
Cost reduction in the manufacture of circuits.
Implementation of high reliable circuit.
Implementation of circuit with little power requirements.
Implementation of circuits with high processing power.
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Signal
A signal is any physical quantity that carries
information.
Signal can exist in the form of
Audible
visual or other indication of information
In electronics a signal is information that is carried by
electrical waves in electrical conductor or as an
electromagnetic field.
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Types of signals in electronics
Analog signal-This is a signal that varies continuously with
time example analog watches
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Digital signal-This is a signal that has discrete values
example digital watches.
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Digital electronics fundamentals
Digital electronics is a branch in electronics that deals
with circuits that manipulates data that are in discrete
form i.e. having discrete values.
Digital electronics has emerged to be with many
advantages compared with analog electronics
Digital systems are easy to design
Information storage is easy
High precision and accuracy
In digital system the operation can be easily programmed
Digital system are less affected by noise
More digital circuitry can be fabricated in IC chips
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
Objectives of the course
Introducing digital systems as one of the modern system used
today
Being introduced to number systems used in digital electronics
Introduction to logic gates as main building blocks used in digital
design
Design of combinational logic circuits
Design of arithmetic circuits used in implementing digital circuits
Introducing sequential logical circuit
Part 1: Introduction to Digital electronics
