Grade 8 Mathematics Learner's Material. Pasig City: Department of Education

The document describes fundamental terms in mathematics including points, lines, planes, angles, and other geometric objects. It defines a point as having no dimensions and representing an exact location in space. A line is a set of points arranged in a row that extends infinitely in both directions, while a plane is a flat surface composed of points. An angle is the union of two non-collinear rays that share a common endpoint, known as the vertex. The document provides examples and notations used to represent these terms.

Lesson 1. : Mathematical System
Competency: Describe a mathematical system. (M8GE-IIIa-1)
Learning Intent: to be able to describe mathematical system
Value Emphasis: Promote sensitivity towards distance learning
Reference: Grade 8 Mathematics Learner’s Material. Pasig City: Department of Education
B. Concept Notes
In modern mathematics, we accept certain undefined terms. The choice of the undefined terms is
completely arbitrary and generally to facilitate the development of structure, e.g. point, plane,
number, variable, line etc. then, we defined the other terms of the mathematical system in terms of
undefined terms, e.g. angle, line segment, circle, ray etc.

Term Figure Description Notation

A point suggests an exact location in space. It
Point  A has no dimension. point A
We use a capital letter to name a point.

A line is a set of points arranged in a row. It

 R is extended endlessly in both directions. It is a
Line  V one-dimensional figure. line m or
Two points determine a line. That is, two ⃡𝑅̅
distinct points are contained by exactly one line. ̅𝑉̅→
m We use a lower case letter or any two points on
the line to name the line.

A plane is a set of points in an endless flat

surface.
The following determine a plane:
(a) three non-collinear points;
P
Plane (b)two intersecting lines; plane PQR or
(c) two parallel lines; or PQR
Q (d) a line and a point not on the line. We use a
lower case letter or three points on the
R plane to name the plane.

An angle is a union of two non-collinear rays with common endpoint. The two non-collinear rays
are the sides of the angle while the common endpoint is the vertex.
