Structural Analysis Basics

This lesson plan aims to teach students the basics of structural analysis. The learning goals are for students to define what a structure is by providing examples, explain connections and supports, and consider appropriate structure types for different uses. Key topics include static determinacy, members, and free body diagrams. The lesson will begin with introductions and context, then a review of terms through a presentation and example problem. Students will demonstrate their understanding through a short quiz assessing their ability to apply the concepts. Supplemental instruction resources will also be provided.

Lesson Plan Theme

John Upham

Overview
Lesson Topic: The Basics of Structural Analysis

Unit/Theme: Structural Analysis, Module 1 part 3

Learning Goal(s):

● Define what a structure is ( be able to list examples)

● Explaining and understanding what connections and supports are and their implications in
real-world applications
● Being able to think of the big-picture context to the best uses for each type of structure

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to…

1. Define what a structure is ( be able to list examples)

2. Explaining and understanding what connections and supports are and their implications
3. Drawing Free-Body-Diagrams for both statically determinate and indeterminate structures
4. Determine reaction forces using the static equilibrium equations
5. Review key vocabulary from statics, specifically, force equilibrium and denotation for members
when looking at the determinacy of structures

Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to…

1. Students will have a basic understanding of what structures are and a few of their uses
2. Students will be able to analyze structures for determinacy and determine static forces

Key Vocabulary: Needed Materials:

● Static Determinacy ● A calculator is not required but

● Member heavily recommended
● Pin (roller vs. hinge) supports ● Pencil and paper (or computer) for
● Internal hinge note taking
● Main categories of structure types ● A computer for accessing lecture
● Free body diagram (including static notes and the learning assessment
equilibrium equations) quiz
● Define “r” vs. “n”
Lesson Sequence
Introduction: I will briefly introduce myself and establish my credibility (no more than 2 minutes of
presenting time). Then I will give a brief explanation of the real-world implications of
structures.

Building I will have a small review session detailing terms and help with solving simple static
Background: systems. If students need more assistance will be referred to past lectures (fictional in
the context of this assignment), and given to them by the civil engineering learning
center.

Presentation: The presentation will be on google slides and will have enough information for students
with background knowledge to understand the teachings fully. Although, I will be
formatting it so I can go over each section and talk it through with my prospective
students.

Practice and Once I have reviewed all my topics and themes, I will run an example problem.
Application:

Review and I will design a short quiz for my students to apply their knowledge. A low-mid difficulty
Assessment: level would be sufficient for this quiz (most likely done using Quizlet).

Wrap-Up: I will thank the audience for their time and refer them to supplemental instruction
methods, such as office hours, a learning center, and good youtube videos to review the
statics course.
