Experiment 2 To 7 Identification of Gas

The document describes 7 experiments to identify different gases: 1. Experiment 1 identifies hydrogen gas by its burning with a popping sound. 2. Experiment 2 identifies carbon dioxide gas by its neutrality on litmus and bubbling through limewater. 3. Experiment 3 identifies sulfur dioxide gas by its bleaching of litmus, reducing acidified potassium dichromate, and turning limewater milky. 4. Experiment 4 identifies nitrogen dioxide gas by turning starch paper blue-black and acidifying ferrous sulfate solution green. 5. Experiment 5 identifies hydrogen sulfide gas by blackening lead acetate and lead nitrate solutions. 6. Experiment 6 identifies ammonia gas by its alkalinity

Experiment 2

Aim: Identification of gas.

Material required: Granulated Zinc, dilute hydrochloric acid, test tube, test tube holder
Bunsen burner, wooden splint, litmus paper.

Experiment Observation Inference

1. Take active metal Colourless, odourless gas The gas may be H2,O2,CO2
Zinc and dil HCl or evolved
dil. H2SO4
2. Bring moist blue and The gas is neutral to litmus The gas may be O2 , H2
red litmus paper near
the mouth test tube
3. A burning wooden The gas burns with a pail The gas is combustible and
splint is brought near blue flame producing a pop non-supporter of combustion
on the mouth of test sound. The burning splint this gas is H2
tube goes off.

Result : This gas is hydrogen

Experiment 3

Aim: Identification of gas.

Material required: Zinc carbonate, test tube, Bunsen burner, splinter, litmus paper, lime
water

Experiment observation Inference

1. Take salt ( metal Colourless odourless gas The gas may be H2,O2,CO2
carbonate) in test tube evolved
And heat
2. On heating metal gas does not burn and Gas neither combustible nor
carbonate put extinguishes a glowing a supporter of combustion.
glowing wooden splinter Gas may be CO2
splinter on the mouth
of test tube Gas is acidic, may be CO2
3. Bring blue litmus blue litmus paper turn red
paper near the mouth
test tube This gas is CO2
4. Pass this gas to lime lime water turns milky
water
Result : This gas is carbon dioxide
Experiment 4

Aim: Identification of gas.

Material required: zinc sulphites or sodium sulphites, dilute hydrochloric acid, test tube, test
tube holder Bunsen burner, litmus paper, acidified potassium dichromate solution, potassium
permanganate solution, filter paper

Experiment observation Inference

1. Take a salt in test Colourless suffocating smell The gas may be SO2
tube add dil HCl or gas evolved
dil.. H2SO4
2. Bring moist blue Blue litmus turns red then The gas is acidic and a
litmus paper near the bleaches bleaching agent
mouth test tube
3. Take salt + dil HCl
and heat A burning Extinguishes a glowing The gas is neither
wooden splint is splinter and gas does not combustible nor a supporter
brought near on the catch fire of combustion
mouth of test tube
4. Pass this gas to lime lime water turns milky The gas may be CO2 or SO2
water
5. Bring paper dipped in Decolourises pink colour of The gas is a reducing agent
KMnO4 solution to acidified KMnO4 solution
the mouth of test tube
6. Bring paper dipped in Paper turn green This gas is SO2
acidified K2Cr2O7 to
the mouth of test tube

Result : This gas is sulphur dioxide

Experiment 5

Aim: Identification of gas.

Material required: zinc sulphide or iron sulphide, dilute hydrochloric acid, test tube, test
tube holder Bunsen burner, litmus paper, lead acetate solution, lead nitrate ,filter paper

Experiment observation Inference

1. Take a salt in test Colourless gas smell like that The gas may be H2S
tube add dil HCl or of rotten egg
dil.. H2SO4
2. Bring moist blue Blue litmus turns red then The gas is acidic and a
litmus paper near the bleaches bleaching agent
mouth test tube
3. Bring paper dipped in The lead acetate paper turns The gas may be H2S
lead acetate solution black
to the mouth of test The gas may be H2S
tube
4. Pass this gas to lead Solution turns black The gas is H2S
nitrate solution

Result : This gas is hydrogen sulphide

Experiment 6

Aim: Identification of gas.

1. Material required: copper nitrate or lead nitrate, dilute hydrochloric acid, test tube,
test tube holder Bunsen burner, litmus paper, starch iodide paper, acidified ferrous
sulphate solution

Experiment observation Inference

2. Take a salt in test Reddish brown gas with The gas may be NO2
tube add dil HCl or pungent and irritating odour g
dil.. H2SO4 evolved

3. Bring moist blue Blue litmus turns red The gas is acidic
litmus paper near the
mouth test tube
4. Bring starch iodide The starch iodide paper turns The gas may be NO2
paper to the mouth of blue black
test tube
5. Pass this gas to The gas is NO2
acidified ferrous Solution turns green
sulphate solution

Result : This gas is nitrogen dioxide

Experiment 7

Aim: Identification of gas.

Material required: Ammonium chloride, sodium hydroxide, test tube, test tube holder
Bunsen burner, red litmus paper, conc .Hydrochloric acid, glass rod, Nessler’s reagent

Experiment observation Inference

1. Take a ammonium colourless gas with sharp The gas may be NH3
salt in test tube add pungent odour evolved
Alkali (NaOH)

2. Bring moist red Red litmus turns blue The gas is basic
litmus paper near the
mouth test tube
3. A glass red dipped in Dense white fumes formed The gas may be NH3
conc. HCl bring near
the gas
4. Pass this gas to Colourless Nessler’s reagent The gas is NH3
Nessler’s reagent turns brown

Result : This gas is Ammonia
