ESSAY

Hunting, habitat destruction, and climate change are reducing populations of endangered species and pushing them towards extinction. Habitats are being destroyed as natural areas are converted for commercial and urban development, and by climate change impacts like intense storms and drought. While extinction is a natural part of evolution, human activities are now the primary drivers causing populations to decline and pushing endangered species closer to extinction. Citizens can help endangered species by reporting sightings and participating in conservation and climate initiatives.

Now or Never: Protect Endangered Species

Extinction is a natural part of progressive evolution. It may occur due to incompetence to

cope with competition for food resources and destruction of natural habitat. Before going extinct,
organisms are first categorized in the borderline of extinction - being endangered. Endangered
species are species having low populations and threatened extinction.

During the primitive times, hunting was the primary source of food for survival.
Nowadays, food is not the sole benefit that humans can get but other animal parts are also
processed into useful products. This is one of the reasons why animals become endangered.
Due to continuous hunting and killing animals, their population becomes low and at risk of
extinction. For example, crocodiles are hunted and killed for their skin to be processed as
leather for shoes, belts, and bags and for their meat to be eaten. Aside from killing them for
products and food, destruction of their habitat also plays a major role in why their population
barely survives in the wild.

Natural habitats of endangered animals are destroyed primarily by two reasons:

commercializing natural habitat and climate change. Humans expand their territory by
converting forestlands, mountains, and other natural environments into more developed spaces
or urban areas. By nature, climate change also plays a significant role in diminishing the natural
habitat of these species and even their capacity to survive. Habitats of these species may shift,
shrink, and disappear because of this global phenomenon. For example, occurrences of intense
storms destroy forestlands, rivers, caves, mangroves, aquatic ecosystems, and among others.
On the other hand, intense heat and droughts may also cause stress to plants and animals
which slowly leads to destruction of their ecosystem.

The content of the document given is the information of species who are classified as
endangered exclusively in the Philippines. Given its taxonomic classification, identification,
geographic range, population, and its habitat and ecology, we can learn and understand its way
of living and survival. Most species are found in wild forests and other open environments.
However, because of them being endangered, we can now see them inside man-made cages
wherein a wildlife organization preserves or helps them to prevent extinction.

Killing endangered animals and continuous harming of our environment will make them
extinct which affects biodiversity. Fortunately, there are active organizations which protect and
aid endangered species. As average citizens, we can only help these animals by reporting to
the authorities whenever we encounter an endangered one during our nature trips and by
actively participating in climate change campaigns as responsible residents of the Earth.
