Course Structure
Type (compulsory/ Compulsory

Course Goal This unit builds on the theory and skills of Remote Sensing and focuses on
advanced aspects of remotely sensed image analysis. These additional
remote sensing analysis skills are highly valued by employers in the spatial
industry. The unit will provide you with practical skills in image analysis
techniques, such as geometric and atmospheric image correction, image
filters, texture measures, image enhancements and transformations,
classification algorithms, object-based image analysis, change detection,
and accuracy assessment. The theory is illustrated with a range of real-
world applications using optical, hyperspectral, and RADAR imagery, and
LiDAR data. Computer practicals and an independent project promote
practical remote sensing skills in the latest image processing online
platforms.
Learning Outcomes On the completion of this course, students should be able to:
- appreciate the value of remote sensing imagery as a core element for
a(ny) Digital Earth
- explain and communicate the fundamentals of remote sensing
including physical principles and characteristics of platforms and
sensors
- gain experience with at least two different cloud platforms for remore
sensing image analysis - e.g. Sentinel Hub and ArcGIS Image for
ArcGIS Online
- modify multi-band image display according to information needs and
application domains
- visually integrate imagery with geospatial displays, products and apps
- access, manage, explore and integrate remote sensing imagery into
geospatial workflows and products
- understand and adequately apply simple classification methods,
starting from indices
- work with raster analysis methods, including pre- and post-processing
- implement simple change detection and monitoring tools
- be aware of advanced topics of remote sensing data management and
analysis in general terms
1. Exploring and integrating remotely sensed imagery
2. Fundamentals: from physics to visuals
3. Platforms, sensors and data
4. Imagery to thematic layers
Course contents:
5. Classification and Feature Extraction
6. Terrain and surface / feature analysis
7. Monitoring and detecting change
