Assignment/Project/Design: Cpe 420: Semester: October 22-March 2023

This document outlines an assignment for a course on Introduction to Chemical Engineering. Students will visit a chemical plant and prepare a report addressing: 1) the chemical processes, 2) potential safety and health risks and practices, 3) environmental impacts and prevention methods, and 4) the waste management system. The assignment aims to develop students' understanding of complex engineering problems regarding safety, health and the environment through application to a real chemical process. Students must submit their group report by January 23rd for evaluation based on comprehension of engineering concepts and issues.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This assignment utilizes the approach of complex problem solving related to safety, health and environment
topics based on the chosen/visited chemical plant.

2.0 COURSE AND PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEMS &
KNOWLEDGE PROFILE

This assignment addresses one (1) course outcomes and one (1) programme outcomes (PO) which are
mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required knowledge profiles (WK)
as shown in Table 1.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

a) Explain the processes involved to produce the main product at the chemical plant.
b) Describe thoroughly the impacts of chemical processes on safety, health and environment.
c) Explain the waste management system available at that plant.

4.0 DESCRIPTION

Your group is assigned to conduct an industrial visit to a chemical plant as part of the course activity for
more exposure to the real chemical engineering field. Apart from the visit, your group is required to
accomplish the tasks in Section 5.0. You may choose any suitable chemical plant from the journal if the
visit is canceled due to time constraints.

5.0 YOUR TASK

• Chemical processes

Explain the processes at the visited plant by considering the relevant diagram or PFD.

• Safety and health

Discuss the potential risk/accident that may occur for the whole process at the plant. List five (5) safety
and health practices in order to avoid or reduce that risk/accident.

• Environment

Identify at least 5 issues regarding the environmental effect of this plant and provide five (5) suggestions
for prevention.

• Waste management system

Identify type of waste from the processes and explain waste management system to reduce impacts to
environment.
