Tutorial Pump Performance & Pump Configuration:
1) A pump draws water at a steady flow rate of 11.3 kg/s through a piping system. The pressure on
the suction side of the pump is -17.2 kPa (gauge). The pump outlet pressure is 345 kPa (gauge). The
inlet pipe diameter is 75 mm and the outlet pipe diameter is 50 mm. Calculate the power required
to drive the pump if the pump efficiency is 70%.
2) A 125 mm diameter pipeline conveying water at 25⁰C (μ = 7.99 x 10-4 Pa.s) contains 50 m of straight
galvanized pipe (roughness = 0.15 mm) with five fully open gate valves, one fully open globe valve
and seven standard 90⁰ elbows. The entrance conditions are P1 = 150 kPa and z1 = 15 m and exit
conditions are P2 = 0 kPa and z2 = 30 m. A centrifugal pump is installed in the line to deliver the
water. Determine the pressure rise in the pump so that a volumetric flow rate of 50L/s can be
delivered.
3) A self-priming centrifugal pump is used to pump water at 25⁰C (μ = 7.99 x 10-4 Pa.s, Pv = 3.17 kPa)
from a reservoir whose surface is 2.2 m above the centerline of the pump inlet. The pipe is made
of PVC with an internal diameter (ID) of 24.0 mm with smooth surface roughness. The pipe length
from the reservoir to the pump inlet is 2.8 m. There are only two minor losses in the piping system
from the reservoir to the pump inlet which are a sharp-edged reentrant inlet (K = 0.85) and a
flanged smooth 90⁰ regular elbow (K = 0.3). The pump’s required net positive suction head is
provided by the manufacturer as a curve fit:
NPSHR = 2.2 m + (0.0013 m⁄Lpm2 )Q2
where the volumetric flow rate is measured in Lpm (liter per minute)
(Hint: construct both NPSH curves - H vs Q) using excel)
Estimate the maximum volume flow rate (in Lpm – liter per minute) that can be pumped without
cavitation.
4) There are three (3) pumps with similar capacity being used to deliver fluid to a process unit.
Sketch the head against volumetric flowrate of the combined pump if it arranged in:
a) Series
b) Parallel
Note: Includes the individual pump performance in each sketch and provide necessary label.
5) All four (4) pumps are to be used in a process plant where the capacity of pumps are as follows:
Pump A < Pump B = Pump C < Pump D
Pump Shutoff head (m) Free delivery (m3/h)
Pump A 2 10
Pump B 3 20
Pump C 3 20
Pump D 5 40

b) Parallel
Note: Include the individual pump performance in each sketch and provide necessary label.
