You are required to power an overhead rain pipe system at a waterfront outdoor resort in
hot season. The water is to be sourced from the stream adjacent to the resort. The resort
is located 43m above the surface of the stream and the pump is installed on a level ground
which is 4m above the surface of the stream. The pipe used in the system is 3cm internal
diameter and is made of galvanized iron. The suction pipe into the pump is 20m and
includes a square-edged inlet, one standard 90° elbow and, two standard 45° elbow. The
discharge pipe is 45m long and includes three standard 45° elbows.
Calculate the head loss in the suction pipe of the pump if the system requires
0.00667m3/s at a gauge pressure of 2.961 standard atmospheres.
Determine the gauge pressure at the pump inlet and the hydraulic power requirement of
the pump
In the case where the pipe diameter was to be increased to 6cm, explain what would
happen to the hydraulic power requirement of the pump? Use Microsoft excel
spreadsheet to develop a standard template for calculating the hydraulic power
requirement for such a system.
Group 2.
A pump in the system shown below draws water from a sump and delivers it to an open
tank through using 10 cm diameter commercial steel pipe at a design flow rate of
0.0133m3/s.
Determine the head losses in both the suction and discharge pipes.
Calculate the gauge pressure Pd and NPSHA.
What is the suitable pump for this application? Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet to
develop a standard template for selecting a suitable pump for such a system
Group 3.
The net positive suction head required (NPSHR) for a pump operating at 1800rpm is given
as
Hr = H0 = AQ2
Where H0 = 3.048m of water and A = 7.9 ft/cfs2.
The pump draws the water from a reservoir whose surface is 6.71 m above the centerline
of the pump. The pump suction pipe is 6.096m long and 15.24cm internal diameter made
from cast iron and consists a reentrant inlet, and a 90° standard elbow.
Determine the maximum volume flow rate at 21.1℃ for which the suction head is
sufficient to avoid cavitation.
Explain how will the NPSHR change if the pump is placed further away by 5%?
Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet to develop a standard template for selecting a suitable
pump location in order to prevent cavitation for such a system

The mining of a precious rock at a manganese mine in Mansa is to be achieved by utilizing
a high-speed jet of water. The source of water is located at about 400m above the mine
site. The water is to be delivered using fire hose which is 1000m long. It has an inside
diameter of 7.5 cm and relative roughness of 0.01. The pipe includes fittings with
equivalent length of 20 D and a placed every 100m along the hose. The nozzle outlet
diameter is 2.5 cm with a KL of 0.03 based on outlet velocity.
Determine the magnitude and direction of the force exerted on a rock face considering a
fully rough turbulent flow
Explain how will the exerted force change when the mine site goes deep with the initial
activities by 10%. Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet to develop a standard template for
determining the force exerted on the rock face considering that the site will vary with more
mining activities
Group 5.
The expression below gives reasonable accuracy for computing turbulent friction factor
Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet to compute the % error of the above expression for the
friction factor with that of Colebrook equation as a function of Ronalds number and relative
roughness for fully developed flow with maximum Ronalds number of 108. You may
consider the relative roughness from 0.00005 to 0.002.
Develop a plot of friction factor against Ronalds number and relative roughness based
on the above expression
Group 6.
A new Chemical plant is required to pump process water from a river which is 3000m from
the plant site. The design engineer has done preliminary design and reports that a flow
of 600gal/min and 6-inch commercial steel pipe will be required. As an intern attached to
the design engineer, you have been asked to advise the pressure drop across the pipe
and the annual operating cost if the power cost 10 Ngwee per kilowatt-hour. When going
through your calculations you realize that it could be a good idea to change the diameter
of the pipe to 8 inches
Write a brief report to your supervisor detailing your findings following the request on
pressure drop and annual operating cost.
Advise whether changing the diameter to 8 inches will reduce the power cost enough to
offset the increased pipe cost due to increase in diameter? You may use K300/m of length
for installed cost of 6-in pipe and K400/m for 8-inch pipe. Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet
to develop a standard template for evaluating the economic gain of such a system.

In an industrial application, water at 20oC is pumped from one large tank to another large
tank that is at higher elevation, and is located in a different section of the plant. The free
surfaces of both reservoirs are exposed to the atmosphere, and the elevation difference
between the two surfaces is 5m. The pipe is 1.27 cm I.D. PVC plastic pipe. The total pipe
length is 47.48m. The entrance and exit are sharp, and both the entrance and exit are
submerged. There are five regular flanged smooth 90-degree elbows, and two fully open
globe valves. The pump’s performance (supply curve) is approximated by the expression
Havailable = hpump, u supply = H0 − aQ2
where shutoff head H0 = 18.0 m of water column, coefficient a = 0.045 m/LPM2, available
pump head Havailable is in units of meters of water column, and volume flow rate Q is in
units of liters per minute (LPM).
.
Determine the volume flow rate of water through this piping system for fully developed
turbulent flow
Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet to develop a standard template for selecting a
suitable pump for such a system.
Group 8.
Water is pumped from a river to aluminum storage tank that is located 22m above the
surface of the river. The water is transported via a 7.62cm internal diameter galvanized
iron pipe. The inlet suction pipe is 15.24m long and has one rounded inlet and two
standard 90° elbow. The discharge pipe is 60.96m long and includes three standard 90°
elbows and two gate valves.
Estimate the system operating point for fully rough zone and an average velocity of
3.66m/s at 15.6℃.
Determine the power input to the pump if its efficiency at the operating point is 80%.
Sketch the system curve when the water level in the upper tank is 30m above the surface
of the river.
Use Microsoft excel spreadsheet to develop a standard template for selecting a suitable
pump for such a system.
