02 HISTORY OF DCS
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

• Early minicomputers were used in the control of industrial processes since the beginning of the
1960s.
• The IBM 1800, for example, was an early computer that had input/output hardware to gather
process signals in a plant for conversion from field contact levels (for digital points) and analog
1960 signals to the digital domain.

• In the early 1970s Taylor Instrument Company, (now part of ABB) developed the 1010 system,
Foxboro the FOX1 system and Bailey Controls the 1055 systems.
• All of these were DDC applications implemented within mini-computers
1970

• The DCS was introduced

• Both Honeywell and Japanese electrical engineering firm Yokogawa introduced their own
independently produced DCSs at roughly the same time, with the TDC 2000 and CENTUM
systems, respectively.
PCI 1153

• US-based Bristol also introduced their UCS 3000 universal controller.

• In 1980, Bailey (now part of ABB) introduced the NETWORK 90 system.
1975-1980 • Also in 1980, Fischer & Porter Company (now also part of ABB) introduced DCI-4000 (DCI
stands for Distributed Control Instrumentation).

The '90s were also known for the "Fieldbus Wars", where rival organizations competed
to define what would become the IEC fieldbus standard for digital communication with
field instrumentation instead of 4-20 milliamp analog communications

02 DEFINITION OF DCS
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 Part of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system.

 The entire system of controllers are connected by networks for
communication and monitoring
 The system that integrates the PLCs and process controllers of a
process line into a coordinated, interactive system.
 It enables us to manage the process as a complete system, with
control over the interrelationship of the various subsystems.
PCI 1153
02 DEFINITION OF DCS
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 DCS was introduce after number on control technology which are:

1. Panel Control System
2. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
3. DDC (Direct Digital Control)
4. DCS ( Distributed Control System)
 DCS is a very broad term used in a variety of industries, to monitor
and control distributed equipment with remote intervention.

02 DCS OVERVIEW
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 DCS inherently have field nodes and termination racks, thus

reducing the high cost of fields wiring and allowing for more
accurate signal transmission.
 In DCS, the software for operator ,I/O, the basic control
algorithms and the system operation software are embedded
in the various elements of the system
PCI 1153
02 ADVANTAGES OF DCS
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 Efficient engineering and

faster commissioning User-
friendly graphic interface for
configuration, commissioning,
operation, diagnostics and
maintenance. Also from the
control room
 Higher productivity Fast
and convenient changing of
device parameter settings

from the operator terminals.

02 ADVANTAGES OF DCS
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 Increased effectiveness of maintenance Online access to

device status and diagnostics enables you to identify problems
quickly and accurately. You will reduce the number of useless
excursions into the field.
 Improved process availability Diagnoses potential failures
before they occur using the online diagnostics information.
Down time is decreased and process availability increased.
PCI 1153
02 ADVANTAGES OF DCS - INTEGRITY
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 The expected process down-time caused by a

DCS is significantly less than with using a
SCADA/PLC.
 Reason for this would include redundancy, fault
tolerance, diagnostic alarming on I/O errors,
system design, and others.
PCI 1153
02 ADVANTAGES OF DCS – ENGINEERING TIME
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 Minimizes response time that is necessary in a

control application with distributed I/O
requirements.
 Reduced complexity and lower system costs.
 Advanced functionality for your control system.
 Enhanced capabilities of I/O products.
PCI 1153
02 DCS APPLICATIONS
DISTRIBUTED CONTROL SYSTEM

 Oil & Gas – From pipelines to refining

 Chemical – From industrial chemicals to fibers
 Food & Beverage – From brewing to bottling
and from mixing to baking
 Life Science – From drug conception through
packaging
 Pulp & Paper – From pulping to coating
