THE GREAT PLEBEIAN COLLEGE

ALAMINOS CITY, PANGASINAN

S.Y 2021-2022

NAME: ANGELICA MAE SUAREZ YEAR/COURSE: BSA- II

SUBJECT: ART APPRECIATION

DISCUSSION 2
Lesson 5 - Artists and Artisans

Let's Get Started

1. What art form can you must relate to and appreciate? It may be architecture, sculpture,
painting, music, literature, film, dance, performance/theatre, and living traditions.

The art form that I can most relate and appreciate is Music.

2. Name an artist whose works you really like.

Maximillian Rasmussen - a Danish singer/songwriter

3. Is there a particular work of art created by him or her that you relate to and appreciate?
What is it and why?

I really like his song "Beautiful Scars" because I think most of the young generation
can relate to this song. It's about him facing his life while growing up. And how he used to
behave and treat people around him. How we all have bad sides that sometimes burst out
in the world with no warning. Through the line that says"...growing up was never meant to
be easy". For me it's about the struggles of growing up in the environment that we are in
today. The standards of the society that is hard to reach. The insecurities of young people
that stop them from doing and getting what they want. But listening through the lines of
this song "...Cause it's a part of you that will make you strong. Embrace your flaws", it tells
us that no one in this world is perfect. Everyone has insecurities, flaws and imperfections,
so embrace that and live your life as good as you possibly can. Because at the end of the
day, you only have yourself in getting back stronger.

4. Based on what you wrote, make an assumption about what painting means.

Painting is a way of self-expression to most people, such as expression of ideas and

emotions. It is also being creative of what picture or image you have created in your mind. It
is a kind of art form through visual. It is done through applying paint of different colors
either in a paper, wall or wood using a brush and other medium.
ACTIVITY 1
Comprehension Check

1. What do you think is the role of the artist in the twenty-first century society?

I think the role of the artist in the twenty-first century society is to share and express their
ideas as well as to communicate and connect with people's emotion. Since they are 21st
century artist, they are modern artisans. And through the help of advance technology they
can now enhance and improve some work of arts. They can create new things through their
creativity and imagination. They can turn arts more interactive to people, like what we have
now; such as fashion designing, digital art, graphic arts and so on. They can also contribute
to the overall development of the society by preserving artwork pieces from the past, giving
us inspiration about the culture and thoughtful critique to political and social systems in the
country.

2. How relevant still are the National Artist and GAMABA, not only to the art world, but also
to the Filipino Society?

The National Artist and GAMABA are significant not only to the art world but also to the
Filipino Society because these are great achievements of the Filipino artists that they are
given the highest recognition. It gives honor and pride to the Filipino people as well,
especially to those traditional folk artist to preserve their works and recognize their
significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the nation. These National Artist and
Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) Award are granted by the Government of the
Philippines for the Filipino artists and creators for their contributions to the country's
Philippine music, theater, dance, film, visual arts, literature and architecture. Being
recognized by your own country is a great honor and privilege. It tells that our nation is
really embracing the traditional culture through different arts and they are giving genuine
appreciation to our Filipino artists.
ACTIVITY 2
Critique Paper
Analyze and critique state-sponsored recognition for artist and cultural workers. What do you think are
some of the considerations that must be addressed with regards to these?

Arts are necessary for a country's culture and economy especially to the flourishing, creative,
and inventive one. As a result, artists should be aided and encouraged in any possible manner. It was the
state who would provide that assistance without any limitations.

The government should support Filipino artists for their unwavering work and dedication in their
fields of competence. Not only do they need financial support, but they also need to be recognized for
their enormous contributions to the growth of the Philippine arts. Some considerations that must be
addressed in recognizing and honoring national artists is the contribution of artist's works to nation-
building, excellence in the practice of their art field which enriches artistic expression or style and impact
of their distinctive and initiative works on succeeding generations of artists. Supporting local artists is
also vital as a community, because without the support of local citizens, the art they create will not have
the impact it could have. Beautiful art is created when artists are able to express themselves artistically
and freely, and it may be admired by the community and the world.

Art had witnessed the Philippines' notable history, from the rise of revolution to the
establishment of democracy. Regardless of nationality, religion, or age, the arts enable us to express our
ideals, develop bridges between cultures, and bring us together. In fact, art has done so much for our
country, and we must acknowledge this by supporting local and traditional artists and driving programs
to preserve, maintain and protect our cultural heritage.
