Assignment 1, 110 pts – Due on 05/26/2023
1. (10 pts) Introduce yourself on the discussion board “Class Introductions”. Talk about your
background, your interests, your expectations from the class and any other general comment.
This excercise will help you find members to create the project team.
2. (5 pts) Additively manufactured Ti6Al4V (Titanium-Aluminum-Vanadium) components
ware subjected to heat treatment for one hour and the resulting tensile strengths (units
are MPa) were recorded as: 953, 955, 948, 951, 957, 949, 954, 950, 959
(a) Calculate the sample average
(b) Calculate the sample standard deviation
3. (10 pts) Suppose that 90% of all batteries from a certain supplier have acceptable voltages.
A certain type of flashlight requires two type-D batteries, and the flashlight will work only if
both its batteries have acceptable voltages. Among ten randomly selected flashlights, what
is the probability that at least nine will work? What assumptions did you make in the course
of answering the question posed?
4. (10 pts) Out of 200 bolts, 5 are defective. Determine the probability that a randomly
selected sample (without replacement) of size 10 will have no defective bolts. Compare the
results for hypergeometric distribution and its binomial approximation.
5. (15 pts) A very large batch of components has arrived at a distributor. The batch can be
characterized as acceptable only if the proportion of defective components is at most .10.
The distributor decides to randomly select 10 components and to accept the batch only if
the number of defective components in the sample is at most 2.
(a) What is the probability that the batch will be accepted when the actual proportion of
defectives is .01? .05? .10? .20? .25?
(b) Repeat part (a) with “1” replacing “2” in the acceptance sampling plan.
(c) Repeat part (a) with “15” replacing “10” in the acceptance sampling plan.
(d) Which of the three sampling plans, that of part (a), (b), or (c), appears most satisfactory,
and why?
6. (20 pts) An instructor who taught two sections of engineering statistics last term, the first
with 20 students and the second with 30, decided to assign a term project. After all projects
had been turned in, the instructor randomly ordered them before grading. Consider the first
15 graded projects.
1
(a) What is the probability that exactly 10 of these are from the second section?
(b) What is the probability that at least 10 of these are from the second section?
(c) What is the probability that at least 10 of these are from the same section?
(d) What are the mean value and standard deviation of the number among these 15 that
are from the second section?
(e) What are the mean value and standard deviation of the number of projects not among
these first 15 that are from the second section?
7. (15 pts) Automobiles arrive at a vehicle equipment inspection station according to a Poisson
process with rate α = 10 per hour. Suppose that with probability .5 an arriving vehicle will
have no equipment violations.
(a) What is the probability that exactly ten arrive during the hour and all ten have no
violations?
(b) For any fixed y ≥ 10, what is the probability that y arrive during the hour, of which
ten have no violations?
(c) What is the probability that ten “no-violation” cars arrive during the next hour? [Hint:
Sum the probabilities in part (b) from y = 10 to ∞.]
8. (15 pts) The breakdown voltage of a randomly chosen diode of a certain type is known to
be normally distributed with mean value 40 V and standard deviation 1.5 V.
(a) What is the probability that the voltage of a single diode is between 39 and 42?
(b) What value is such that only 15% of all diodes have voltages exceeding that value?
(c) If four diodes are independently selected, what is the probability that at least one has
a voltage exceeding 42?
9. (5 pts) In the class you learned that if Z is a standard normal random variable, then Z 2 has
a chi-squared distribution with ν = 1. Let Z1 , Z2 , . . . , Zn be n independent standard normal
random variables. What is the distribution of Z12 + Z22 + . . . + Zn2 ?
10. (5 pts) Let X1 , . . . , Xn be a random sample from a normal distribution with mean µ and
Pn
variance σ 2 . What is the distribution of the sum Y = i=1 [(Xi − µ)/σ]2 ?
