GERUND
I. What is gerund?

A verb form that ends in -ing and is used as a noun. This looks
exactly as a present participle, and for this reason it is now common
to call both forms “the -ing form”.

However it is useful to understand the difference between the


two. The gerund always has the same function as noun although it
looks like a verb.

II. What is gerund phrase?

It is a phrase introduce by a gerund.

e.g.

Striving to promote the cause of peace was foremost in her mind


when she was still living.

III. Uses or Functions of Gerunds

A. Subject:

1. Attaining global unity and peace is an elusive dream.


2. Eating people is wrong.
3. Flying makes me nervous.
4. Striving to promote the cause of peace was foremost in her
mind when she was still living.
B. Object of the verb

1. The UN strives to in attaining global unity and peace.


2. She loved writing and speaking and made them her vehicle in
telling the message that peace would depend on international
friendship.
3. Development means creating jobs for people.

C. Subjective Complement

1. His priority is attaining global unity and peace.


2. Eleanor Roosevelt’s dream was uniting not only America but
the whole world as well.
3. One of his duties is attending meetings.
4. One of life’s pleasure is having breakfast in bed.

D. Object of the preposition

1. She was admired for creating something of unique value….an


example.
2. Everybody must get involved in attaining global unity and
peace.
3. She is good at painting.
4. They’re keen on windsurfing.
5. We arrived in Madrid after driving all night.

E. Appositive

An appositive is used to identify or explain a noun.

1. His priority, attaining global unity and peace, seems to be an


elusive dream.
2. Everyone has one vision for the next century, raising the
quality of living of all people of the world.
3. She thought she would have more time doing other activities
outside of her busy schedule, reading, relaxing, and perhaps
gardening.
IV. Exercises / Activities

A. Identify the sentence that uses a gerundial phrase by underlining


it. If the sentence does not use a gerund or gerundial phrase mark
it with an X.

B. Complete each sentence with a correct gerund form from the


parentheses. Identify the function of the gerund. Write the
function in the space provided before the number.
