Chapter III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this chapter, the researchers will discuss the following: research design,
subject of the study, research instruments, data gathering procedure and the
statistical treatment of data.
Research Design
The researchers used descriptive survey method of research to gather
information about the level of musical intelligence and the academic performance
of education students at Batangas State University. Descriptive research design is
a scientific method which involves observing and describing the behaviour of a
subject without influencing it in any way (Shuttleworth, 2008).
The researchers chose this method because it is the most appropriate for
presentation of information, analysis and interpretation that will be gathered from
the education students of Batangas State University Malvar Campus.
Subject of the Study
This study will focus on the education students of Batangas State
University – Malvar for the academic year 2012 – 2013. The total population of
respondents is 299 students. No sampling method will be used to determine the
size of the respondents. The researchers will consider all the students who belong
to the education department.
Research Instrument
The main tool to be used in gathering data will be the adapted standardized
questionnaire. This will be used to measure the profile of the students, their
musical intelligence and to determine their academic performance.
The questionnaire is a composition of two parts. The first part contains the
profile of the respondents which includes basic information such as sex and year
level, course and field of specialization.
The second part was the assessment on their musical intelligence and the
determination of their academic performance. The instrument will contain 15
items that will determine the respondents’ musical intelligence.
The instrument was given to the adviser and the panel members for its
validation. Revisions will follow.
In the researchers constructed questionnaire, the respondents are requested
to rate each item in a five (5) point rating scale with corresponding verbal
interpretation.
Numerical value Mean Range Interpretation
5 4.20 – 5.00 Outstanding
4 3.40 – 4.19 Satisfactory
3 2.60 – 3.39 Fair
2 1.80 – 2.59 Poor
1 1.00 – 1.79 Very Poor

To know the respondents perception in their academic performance and
musical intelligence the following mean ranges with its interpretation was used to
interpret the weighted and composite mean.
Data Gathering Procedure
The researcher prepared a letter for the college of teacher education dean’s
office to ask permission to have the list of all education students enrolled on the
second semester of the Academic Year 2012-2013. The permission to distribute
the questionnaires is also asked by the researchers.
After getting the permission, the researchers distributed the questionnaires
to the respondents. Each item was read and explained by the researchers. After
the respondents finished the questionnaire, it will be collected by the researchers.
The researchers computed the result and kept it for the data to be written in the
latter part of the study.
Statistical Treatment of Data
The data gathered through the use of survey forms and questionnaires was
tallied, analyzed, and interpreted using statistical tool most appropriate to answer
the question posed on the study.
Frequency and Percentage. This will be used to determine the distribution
of the respondents to sex and year level.
Weighted Mean. This will be used to determine the level of musical
intelligence of the respondents.
19
Chi-Square Test of Independence. This will be used to determine the
significant relationship between the level of musical intelligence of the
respondents and their academic performance.
