MEN, AND WOMEN IN CONVERSATION
ACCORDING TO Deborah Tannen:
Deborah Tannen, a well-known professor of linguistics at Georgetown University, specializes
in the conversational rituals of men and women in the US. Her first bestseller You Just Don't
Understand: Women and Men in Conversations launched the genderlect theory in 1990.
Its development since then—although not always tied to the term itself—has been associated
with a range of scholars who study how gender ideology shapes patterns in women's and men's
language usage. The main point in the gender theory is that men and women are different in
speaking styles but they are not their fault because those changes are viewed with time in men
and women from their culture.
Tannen claims that there are Gender differences in the way of speaking between men and
women, so we must avoid blaming them for their voice or conversational style.
Tannen takes a sociolinguistics approach and feels that one
reason is important between men and women to talk to one
another is Cross-Cultural communication. She says that
cross-cultural communication exists so, that every people have
a different culture and because of different culture every
people have a different communication style
One of the main assumptions according to Deborah Tannen is
males. She says that people believe that if anyone needs to
change their conversational style or communication is females.
Tannen believes that if a man talks to women in a conversational like outsider, in the end,
women are forced to change their conversational style. Tannen says that it’s not a good thing. As
DALE SPENDER theorized, women who talk or conversation like the man, judge differently
from other simple women. According to her, those women who objection the men’s speech are
often considered unfeminine, bitchy, and rude.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WAY MEN AND
WOMEN COMMUNICATE:
Tannen outline the differences between men and women that are very essential. She says that
many of the tensions and problems are not the result of gender differences but also their
communication style of them. Women are socialized to believe that only one thing is important
for the women to exist in a relationship talk or conversational style. Talk of the women is like the
glue that must relationships together. Women develop a pattern that is very important and fast
and designed to create unity.
Tannen gives proof of the difference between the gender conversation. She points out the
research of Bruce Dorval in which there were two sex persons videotaped. Tannen points out
that the body language and the eye contact were the differences between both. Here, says talks
about perception and tells that in the videotape man’s thinking is that woman ignores him or vice
versa.
