Equilibrium of A Particle

The document discusses the concept of equilibrium of particles, explaining that a particle is in equilibrium if it remains at rest or has constant velocity. It introduces the use of free body diagrams and Newton's laws to determine the forces acting on a particle to satisfy the condition of static equilibrium that the net force equals zero. Several example problems are presented to demonstrate how to use these principles to calculate unknown forces on particles based on given force and configuration information.

EQUILIBRIUM OF A PARTICLE
A particle is said to be in EQUILIBRIUM if it remains at rest if originally at rest, or has a constant
velocity if originally in motion. Most often, however, the term “equilibrium” or, more specifically,
“static equilibrium” is used to describe an object at rest.

To maintain equilibrium, it is necessary to satisfy Newton’s first law of motion, which requires
the resultant force acting on a particle to be equal to zero

ΣF = 0

ΣFX = 0 and ΣFY = 0
