CEM Assignment 2017

The document contains 4 questions about chemical engineering topics: 1) steady state analysis of a non-isothermal CSTR, 2) concentration over time in a batch reactor, 3) temperature change over time in a stirred tank heater, 4) molar flow rates and compositions in a distillation column sequence. Submit solutions in a folder with enrolment number including report, Comsol program, and discussion of results.

CEM Project (Assignment)
Chemical Engineering Mathematics (CML 224) – Semester IV
Submission Date: 06.03.2017 Marks: 10

NOTE: Submit the following softcopies in a folder. Name the folder with your enrolment number.
(1) Report in word format containing certificate with name of group members, problem statement, steps
in Comsol, Output.
(2) Comsol Program file.

Q1. A first order exothermic reaction is being carried out in a CSTR. The steady state analysis of the non-
isothermal CSTR yields equations as

=
1+
( ) = −(1 + ) + (1 − )=0
In the above equations, Xss and Yss are dimensionless concentration and temperature respectively.
Given the dimensionless parameter values Da = 0.082, B = 22.0, β = 3.0; find all the possible roots of
F(Xss) = 0. Discuss the results.

Q2. Consider a reaction → carried out in a batch reactor. The differential equation for species A is

=−

The initial condition is: at t = 0, CA = 1 mol/m3. The rate constant of the reaction is 1s-1. Determine the
concentration of A at steady state. Use step size of 0.01 sec. Discuss the results.

Q3. Consider a stirred tank heater. It is a square tank 0.5 m on its sides and 2 m high and is filled with water
at 200C. Water is fed to the tank at a flow rate of 1 L/s and exits out at the same flow rate from the top
of the tank. The temperature of inlet water is 200C. At time t = 0 sec, water in the tank is heated by a
coil containing steam whose overall heat transfer coefficient based on the outside area of the coil is 200
W/m2 K. The outside area of the coil through which heat exchange takes place is 1m2. The temperature
of the steam is 2500C. The specific heat capacity of water is 4184 J/kg K. After how much time is the
temperature of exit water 300C? What is the maximum temperature that can be reached in the tank?
Discuss the results.

Q4. Benzene (1), toluene (2), styrene (3), and xylene (4) are to be separated in the sequence of distillation
columns shown in Fig. 1. Determine molar flow rates of streams D1, B1, D2, and B2. The composition
of the feed stream and the streams D1, B1, D2, and B2 is shown in the figure. Also, determine the molar
flow rates and compositions of streams B and D. The molar flow rate of the feed stream is 70 mol/min.
Discuss the results.
