1. Look at the map showing shipping routes in the 16th century from Portugal to the East.
Answer the questions.
1) Why did ships make these voyages?
They did that to mark travel routes because the ships had to find safe routes.
2) What dangers did sailors face on voyages like these?
Sailors faced the weather, ocean, and animals. but the most dangerous was the conflict
with pirates.
2. Read the article about the voyage of one of these ships. Work in pairs. Summarize the main
events. What happened to the ship and crew on its voyage? Why was this ironic?
These ships had the mission of bringing spice, and treasure. it also transported 300 crew
members, soldiers and merchants. the danger was a great storm that sank the ship. Near a
coast.
The irony is that reading says "They had embarked on a great journey in search of riches, and
now here they were, on a coast of unimaginable wealth."
