Eco-Friendly Library Design

The document summarizes the environmental control system features of the National Library of Engineering and Technology building. It has two stories with various reading and study spaces. Issues include insufficient natural light and ventilation due to small, tinted windows. Proposed improvements include replacing windows with tilted windows on the south facade for natural light and ventilation. Landscaping is also proposed on the west facade for views and biodiversity. Replacing windows on the north facade with ones allowing diffused light and adding landscaping could help regulate interior temperatures. The document emphasizes using climate responsive, sustainable and eco-friendly designs and materials.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BUILDING

SITE: NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

3

BUILDING FEATURES
The site was the NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ENGINEERING AND SCIENCES in UET, Lahore.
It is a rectangular building situated at lalazar UET gate no. 3 in front of Round about. It is two
storey building .As the site located in Lahore so its climate is semi arid climate. There is
vegetation on three sides of building except east facade.

Ground Floor
On the ground floor, you'll find a conference room, a quiet reading hall, and a computer lab.
The conference room is equipped for various events and meetings. The reading hall offers a
peaceful reading space, and the computer lab has up-to-date resources for research and
learning.

First and Second Floors

The first and second floors are identical, with a wide selection of books, reading tables, and
drawing boards. They cater to diverse interests, from history to science, and provide a
creative space for intellectual and artistic expression.

Building Features:
The 2-story building combines function and aesthetics. The main entrance on the east side is
elegant, and there's a back entrance for convenience. The building's design emphasizes
natural light, connectivity with nature, and comfortable, welcoming spaces. Some
improvements are needed to address the mechanical load, ensuring its long-term function
and sustainability.
4

The main entrance of library is east facing facade. On east facade their are tinted windows
that blocks 90% clear view for outside. The east facade windows are not good aesthetically
and these windows are small. On the south facade , there are windows that covers the whole
facade which is not good, also allow direct sunlight. As we know the south facing facade
receives most sunlight and was the hottest one. This gives bad affect on building and its
environment.
As we know, south facade windows also block view for outside. These windows are not
opened and are not use for ventilation. Environmental Control Systems in building help
regulate the indoor temperature, humidity, and air quality. They work by circulating fresh air
into buildings and expelling contaminated air.
On the west facade there are also small windows with tinted glass, block sunlight also block
view from outside. As on the left facade there is landscaping which provides good view for
outside. As this building is used by students and by visitors also, so we should provide a
good, captivating and refreshing view. This positioning allows muted sunlight to come through
but not feel overly bright or harsh, large windows are appropriate with proper landscaping.
The north facade, is just like south facade, bulk of tinted windows. As we know north facing
windows don’t get direct sunlight because faced away from the sun. These windows allow
diffused sunlight and does not typically need to be controlled for glare. This makes it suitable
for office spaces and reading rooms. This advantage can help , less glare means that larger
windows can be used without the need for exterior shading.
“Generally north light is calming”
There is a reading hall which is located on south facade, as there are tinted windows block
light , shows many problems for readers.
There are so much mechanical load on buildings as there is no proper ventilation. Proper
ventilation keeps the air fresh and healthy indoors. Structural ventilation controls heat levels
and keeps moisture out of uninsulated walls.
For the NATURAL AND PROPER VENTILATION, on south facade tilted windows that have
certain angle is placed which is aesthetically good looking and blocks hot direct light and
provide proper ventilation. Based on movement of the sun, passive solar buildings typically
have windows on the southern facing side of the building in order to absorb the sun’s heat
energy to warm a building during the winter. In order to stay cool in the summer, passive solar
house rely on system of shading to keep the building cool. Building in this way can reduce its
heating and cooling cost by 85% .
5

The summer sun’s path aides in this process by travelling high in summer sky, thus a proper
overhang or other type of system is needed to shade or cover the window, in summer so that
the sun’s heat energy is blocked or avoided when it is desired to have the building cooler than
the outside temperature.
South facing windows are vital component for a passive solar design and building because
the southern side of building is the side that will receive sunlight throughout the day, allows
the sunlight to be absorbed and distributed through buildings thermal mass.
Keeping in view the GREEN SPACES AND BIODIVERSITY, on the west facade, for better
environment and view provided landscaping . Landscape can help soften spaces between
buildings, can provide links between spaces, can provide a route for people, water and
animals, provide space for gardening and improved environment quality.
Designed Landscape can prevent soil erosion around buildings and other developed areas,
clean storm water runoff by filtering contaminants, encourage groundwater recharge, and
offer valuable shade to protect building and people. Deciduous trees provide shade and block
heat from the sun during hotter months, and by dropping their leaves in the fall they admit
sunlight in the colder months. Use evergreen as windbreaks to save from 10 to 50 percent in
energy used for heating. Deciduous trees also play an essential role in water conservation
and maintaining a healthy water cycle.
MATERIAL SELECTION plays every important role in building environment, its aesthetic and
durability. CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN is a main aspect in building environment. The
comfortable indoor spaces can be achieved by external shading devices and reducing the
convection and conduction heat gains through the windows and walls. Plants also plays an
important role in climate responsive architecture. Green features also dampen sound ,
absorb carbon dioxide and regulate both exterior and interior temperature, making for more
energy efficient building.
Nature based solutions such as planting trees have significant effect on design. On north side
facade replace the tilted windows with other glass windows that allow diffused light to come
in, also added landscaping for good environment, and to regulate interior temperature. It’s
ideal for receiving more winter sun to keep the building warmer in winter. And in summer
adding shade or landscaping protect the building from summer’s sun.
The world shifting towards sustainable practices . Architects explore eco-friendly material,
energy efficient systems and implement green design principles to reduce the carbon footprint
of the structure. Using passive designs can reduce temperature fluctuations, improve indoor
quality and make a building more enjoyable to live.
