: CO-ED HOSTELS IN BITS :
“” Redefining Residential Living for a Modern and Inclusive Campus Community ”"
Currently BITS does not offer co-educational hostel facilities to its students.
Students are all housed in same-gender hostels and are not allowed into other gender hostels.
Boys are not encouraged to wait near girls’ hostels and are whistled off by the guards within
minutes. In this ever advancing world the gender based residential policies have been
unchanged in BITS since its inception and are not expected to change anytime in the near
future. Many institutions in India and all over the world are providing gender neutral residential
opportunities promoting inclusivity, diversity and enhanced socialization.
Gender neutral living space offers a welcoming environment for individuals of all
genders to interact with people of different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. It
creates a safe space for everyone to feel included and part of a greater community. Co-ed
hostels facilitate teamwork and collaborations among students of similar interests leading to
personal growth and more learning opportunities without gender barriers. At work everyone in
the office irrespective of gender has to work as one and gender neutral hostels help it by
familiarizing students with such situations in college itself. Law treats students above 18 as
adults, So the college treating them as children and segregating based on gender makes very
less sense.
However implementation of gender neutral housing is also not withouts its
challenges especially in an orthodox country like us where even the slightest interaction with
strangers of opposite sex is frowned upon by many. The assignment of toilet facilities might
pose a problem here as we are not accustomed to the unisex toilet system. And co-ed hostels
might also lead to unnecessary pressure on students who are not familiar with such close
proximity of opposite gender making their academic life harder. Gender neutral hostels might be
against religious and cultural differences of many. Many students may feel their privacy and
security threatened or compromised.Same gender hostels contribute to a stronger sense of
community by sharing common experiences, challenges and interests leading to formation of
lifelong friendships.
Conclusion:
The co-ed hostels policy should be adjusted to match our modernday’s society’s
needs and work culture. Some hostels are to be turned gender neutral with some wings and
floors being same gendered housing within the hostel and having common general spaces like
mess and common room. Juniors and Seniors are to be permitted to choose their wingmates
irrespective of gender . At Least visiting hours are to be set for students entering other genders
hostels. Gender neutral hostels promote equality and breaking of stereotypes however for those
who want to be in same gender hostels such accommodation is to be provided respecting their
wishes and beliefs.
