Plant Growth Essentials

Plants require several materials to grow and reproduce, including air, soil, water, space, temperature, and nutrients. Water and nutrients play a major role by allowing plants to carry moisture and nutrients between roots and leaves via uptake from the soil. Important nutrients include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Air is also important for plant growth as air pollution can prevent plants from taking in CO2 for photosynthesis and receiving necessary sunlight. Temperature and sufficient space are also required, as optimal photosynthesis only occurs within a certain temperature range and plants need adequate room for roots and leaves to grow without becoming stunted.

Discussion 5.

1 What Materials do Plants Require to Grow

In addition to CO2 and light, plants have basic needs in order to grow and
reproduce like all living organisms. These needs include air, soil, water, space,
temperature, and nutrients. The same as humans and animals, water and nutrients
play a major role for plants to survive. Plants use water to carry moisture and
nutrients back and forth between the roots and leaves. Water and nutrients are
taken up through the roots from the soil. For instance, soil is rich in humus, which
is a consequence of decaying materials such as leaves, grass clippings and compos
is the best for plant growth. Some important nutrients plants take up from the soil
are nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, carbon, oxygen,
hydrogen, and so on.
Why air is important for plant growth? We all heard about the problem of air
pollution and greenhouse effect. Air pollution caused by smoke, gases, etc., also
negatively influences on plants because this prevents plants from taking in CO2
from the air for making food and blocks out sunlight which is necessary for healthy
plant growth.
Last but not least, temperature and space are also required for plants growth. In
fact, temperature contributes to the process of photosynthesis in plants. High
temperature causes tissue damage in most plants and optimal photosynthesis is
impossible if the temperature is too high or too low. Then, depending on plant
types, the size of space is required differently for both roots and leaves to grow.
Without enough room, plants can become stunted.
