Design example of a singly reinforced concrete beam
1. A rectangular reinforced concrete beam is simply supported on two masonry walls 5.0m
apart (center-to-center distance). The beam has to carry a distributed permanent action of
12.14kN/m (excluding beam self-weight) and a variable action of 6kN/m. Design the beam.
Design Data
o Height of the section, h =450mm
o Width of the section, b = 225mm
o Concrete Cover = 25mm
o Concrete Strength, C-20/25
o Reinforcement strength S-500
Assume the bar diameter is 20mm and the link diameter is 10mm for calculating the effective
depth (d).
Step 1- Material strength
0.85∗20
C-20/25 𝑓𝑐𝑑 = = 11.333𝑀𝑃𝑎
1.5
500
S-500 𝑓𝑦𝑑 = 1.15 = 434.78𝑀𝑃𝑎
Step 2- Loading
o Dead Load = γc ∗ b ∗ H = 25 ∗ 0.225 ∗ 0.45 = 2.53kN/m
o Permanent dead load = Gk = 12.14kN/m (excluding self − weight)
o Live Load = Qk = 6kN/m
o Characteristics permanent actions, Gk = 2.53 + 12.14 = 14.67kN/m
o Characteristics variable actions, Qk = 6kN/m
o Design load = Pd = 1.35Gk + 1.5Qk = 1.35 ∗ 14.67 + 1.5 ∗ 6 = 28.8kN/m
28.8kN/m

Design moment for the flexure
𝑃𝑑 ∗ 𝐿2 28.8 ∗ 52
𝑀𝑒𝑑 = = = 60𝑘𝑁𝑚
8 8
Step 3-Determine the effective depth (d)
𝜙𝐿
𝑑 = ℎ − 𝐶𝐶 − − 𝜙𝑠 = 450 – 25 – 20/2 – 10 = 405 𝑚𝑚
2
Step 4- Normalized bending resistance (𝑲)
𝑀𝑒𝑑 60 ∗ 106
𝐾= 2 = = 0.081
𝑏𝑑 𝑓𝑐𝑘 225 ∗ 4052 ∗ 20
Step 5- Check the Compression reinforcement requirement
Check if 𝐾 < 𝐾’ = 0.167…. No Compression reinforcement required!!!
Step 6- Determine the lever arm (Z)
𝑍 = 𝑑 [ 0.5 + √ (0.25 – 𝐾/1.134)] = 𝑑 [ 0.5 + √(0.25 – 0.081/1.134)] = 0.923𝑑
𝑍 = 0.923𝑑 < 0.95𝑑, 𝑶𝒌!
Use 𝑍 = 0.923𝑑 = 0.923 ∗ 405 = 373.6𝑚𝑚
Step 7- Determine the area of tensile reinforcement As
𝑀𝑒𝑑 60 ∗ 106
𝐴𝑆 = = = 369.2𝑚𝑚2
𝑓𝑦𝑑 𝑍 434.78 ∗ 373.6
Use ∅16mm reinforcement bar
𝐴𝑆 369.2
𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = = = 1.84 ≈ 2
𝑎𝑆 𝜋 ∗ 82
𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝟐∅𝟏𝟔𝒎𝒎
𝐴𝑆,𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 = 2 ∗ 𝜋 ∗ 82 = 402𝑚𝑚2
Step 8- check minimum and maximum reinforcement
𝑓 0.26∗2.2∗225∗405
𝐴𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.26 𝑓𝑐𝑡𝑚 𝑏𝑡 𝑑 = 104.25𝑚𝑚2
As provided ≥ 𝑦𝑘 ={ 500 𝑶𝒌!
0.0013𝑏𝑡 𝑑 0.0013 ∗ 225 ∗ 405 = 118.46𝑚𝑚2
o Therefore, provided reinforcement area is greater than the minimum required area.
𝐴𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 0.04𝑏𝑑 = 0.04 ∗ 225 ∗ 405 = 3645𝑚𝑚^2 > 𝐴𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 Ok!
