Lab 2 –Logic Functions: AND, OR
Name : Muhammad Rafay Date : 11-09-2023
Regd-No : 2021-MC-39
OBJECTIVES:
1. To implement logic AND function to control the double acting cylinder.[CLO4]
2. To implement logic OR function to control the double acting cylinder. [CLO4]
3. To perform the experiment in a team. [CLO8]
APPARATUS:
Compressor, Service unit, manifold, 3/2 way push button valve, 3/2 roller lever valve, double acting cylinder, 5/2
way directional control valve, shuttle valve, dual-pressure valve.
Pre-Lab Reading:

The logic AND function
The piston rod of a cylinder 1A is to advance only if the worker presses
the buttons 1S1 and 1S2 together with both hands. If any of the buttons is
unpressed, the cylinder retracts to its retracted position.
One of the uses is to ensure that the worker does not mistakenly put
his/her hand while actuating the cylinder and has to use both hands to
actuate.
Task 1:
1. Draw the circuit diagram for the problem
2. Designate the valves and indicate the numbering system for
the connections (ports).
3. Attach the pneumatic components to the trainer as described

the control valves

which is used to produce AND control logic. It is such hat when 3/2 DCV push button is pressed, it is in
retracted mode but when both buttons are pressed, it moves in forward direction. The air is supplied using
air service unit.
The logic OR function
The shuttle valve is used to implement the logic OR function on two inputs. A double-acting cylinder is used to
transfer parts from a magazine (Figure 2.2). If either a push button or a foot pedal is operated, the cylinder is to
advance. Once the cylinder is fully advanced, it is to retract to the initial position. A 3/2-way roller lever valve is to
be used to detect the full extension of the cylinder.

Task 2:
1. Draw the circuit diagram for the problem
2. Designate the valves and indicate the numbering system for the connections (ports).
3. Attach the pneumatic components to the trainer as described by the instructor and describe what happens
when you actuate the control valve.

1. Circuit Diagram
Working:
In this circuit, a double acting cylinder is working using OR logic control. A shuttle valve is used for this
task. It means that if any of the push buttons is pressed, the cylinder moves in the forward advanced
position and it retracts in the initial position. The compressed air is supplied through air service
unit.
Review Question 1: What other logic functions can be implemented by the combination of AND and OR
functions?
Ans: Only AND & OR functions can be implemented.

Review Question 2: Draw an alternate pneumatic circuit for task 1, that does not use the dual-pressure valve
but implements the AND control similarly.
Comment on what you learned during this lab:
I learnt the working of single and double acting cylinder, with AND & OR logic with limit switch that how
much I want to make a cylinder move forward direction is controlled by using limit switch.
