Reflection Paper #4

Feminist theory seeks to understand and overcome systems of oppression. It examines how individuals interact within social systems and looks for ways to dismantle oppressive structures. Feminist therapy aims to create equal partnerships between therapist and client through open communication and validation of the client's strengths and experiences rather than perceived flaws. The theory continues to evolve with societal changes and focuses on client well-being above all else.

REFLECTION PAPER

April Joy A. Medina GC 508 Counseling Theories & Techniques

Title/Topic: Feminist Theory & Therapy Class Activity: [] Lectured [] Report

[🗸]

Reflection Paper Number: 4 Date Given: May 15, 2023

I. INTRODUCTION:

Feminism addresses gender inequity. Feminist theories, like Marxism, explained global
women's oppression and changed the field's focus. Women's experiences have moved from
generalized to specific and contextualized and from understanding men and women as
categories and focusing on the category "women" to questioning that category's content and
analyzing gendered practices. Thus, while some theorists investigate gender disparity in the
workplace, home, armed forces, economy, or public realm, others study masculine and
feminine activities and how gender is constructed in connection to other social relations. Choice
Theory and Reality Therapy enhance lives.

II. DISCUSSION:

Social and critical theory, which destabilize power and oppression, includes feminist theory. A
feminist lens seeks to understand how individuals interact in systems and find ways to
overthrow oppressive systems. Feminist philosophy examines oppression in all people, not just
women. Feminists fight oppression, regardless of where they place their theory or paradigm.

III. SUMMARY:

Feminist therapy uses the client's self-knowledge and the therapist's psychological expertise in
an equal exchange. To overcome therapist-client power asymmetries, the client must realize
that strength comes from inside. This relationship shows women how to create equal
partnerships in all their encounters. Feminist therapists focus on clients' strengths and validate
their feelings rather than their flaws.

Feminist therapeutic theory also evolves with speech and society. Therapists are accountable.
Feminist therapy does not blame victims. Therapy's main purpose is client well-being.

IV. RECOMMENDATION/ CONCLUSION:

Feminist theory may be difficult to adopt into classroom or practice due to preexisting
preconceptions. Explaining that feminism is about removing oppression for everyone can help
with this problem. "Everything is a feminist issue." Feminist thought examines contemporary
structures to see if they are obstructing anyone. Educators and researchers may actively
dismantle oppressive structures.
