CHAPTER 2.

AN INSIGHT INTO GLOBALIZATION. A LEGAL

APPROACH - 1
TEXT APPROACH:
Globalization, according to sociologists, is an ongoing process that
involves interconnected changes in the economic, cultural, social, and
political spheres of society. As a process, it involves the ever-
increasing integration of these aspects between nations, regions,
communities, and even seemingly isolated places.
In terms of the economy, globalization refers to the expansion of
capitalism to include all places around the world into one globally
integrated economic system. Culturally, it refers to the global spread
and integration of ideas, values, norms, behaviors, and ways of life.
Politically, it refers to the development of forms of governance that
operate at the global scale, whose policies and rules cooperative
nations are expected to abide. These three core aspects of
globalization are fueled by technological development, the global
integration of communication technologies, and the global distribution
of media.
Some sociologists, like William I. Robinson, frame globalization as a
process that began with the creation of the capitalist economy, which
formed connections between distant regions of the world as far back
as the Middle Ages. In fact, Robinson has argued that because a
capitalist economy is premised on growth and expansion, a globalized
economy is the inevitable result of capitalism. From the earliest
phases of capitalism onward, European colonial and imperial powers,
and later U.S. imperialism, created global economic, political,
cultural, and social connections around the world.
But despite this, up until the mid-20th century, the world economy
was actually a compilation of competing and cooperating national
economies. Trade was international rather than global. From the mid-
20th century on, the process of globalization intensified and quickened
as national trade, production, and finance regulations were dismantled,
and international economic and political agreements were forged in
order to produce a global economy premised on the “free” movement
of money and corporations.

VOCABULARY – SEMANTIC PARALLELS:

• PRACTICE vs. PRACTISE

These words are not interchangeable.

Practice is a noun, as in He has gone to football practice; It is time to

put the plan into practice; It is accepted practice to tip the waiters
and our doctor has retired from the practice. Practice is the verb
form, as in He practices piano every evening; We must practise
economy if we are to remain solvent, He is a medical doctor, but he
no longer practises his profession. Note that practise is not one of the
verbs that can end in - ize. In American English both the noun and the
verb are spelt practice.

• ECONOMIC vs. ECONOMICAL

These words are both connected to the nouns economy but they have
different meanings.

Economic means referring or related to the economy as in the

government's economic policies and studying economic theory.
Economical means thrifty, avoiding waste and cheap, as in It is more
economical for four of us to by car than by train. (here economical
means cheap). Another example: She is a very economical
housekeeper. (when economical means avoiding waste). The phrase
economical with the truth is a less forthright way of saying lying as in
politicians accused of being economical with the truth.

• FORMER vs. LATTER

Former refers to the first of two people or things mentioned while

latter refers to the second of two people or things mentioned, as in He
was given two options, either to stay in his present post but accept
less money or to be transferred to another branch of the company. He
decided to accept the former / latter option. Former also means
previous, at an earlier time, as in He is a former chairman of the
company and She is a former holder of the championship title.
DEBATE SECTION:

AN INSIGHT INTO GLOBALIZATION. A LEGAL

APPROACH - 2

The globalization of the world international economy and of the

political culture and structures was led by wealthy, powerful nations
made rich by colonialism and imperialism, including the U.S., Britain,
and many Western European nations. From the mid-twentieth century
on, leaders of these nations created new global forms of governance
that set the rules for cooperation within the new global economy.
These include the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the
Group of Twenty, the World Economic Forum, and OPEC, among
others.
The process of globalization also involves the spread and diffusion of
ideologies (values, ideas, norms, beliefs, and expectations) that foster,
justify, and provide legitimacy for economic and political
globalization. History has shown that these are not neutral processes
and that it is ideologies from dominant nations that fuel and frame
economic and political globalization. Generally speaking, it is these
that are spread around the world, becoming normal and taken for
granted.
The process of cultural globalization happens through the distribution
and consumption of media, consumer goods and the Western
consumer lifestyle. It is also fueled by globally integrated
communication systems like social media, disproportionate media
coverage of the world’s elite and their lifestyles, the movement of
people from the global north around the world via business and leisure
travel, and the expectations of these travelers that host societies will
provide amenities and experiences that reflect their own cultural
norms.
Because of the dominance of Western and Northern cultural,
economic, and political ideologies in shaping globalization, some refer
to the dominant form of it as “globalization from above.” This phrase
refers to the top-down model of globalization that is directed by the
world’s elite. In contrast, the “alter-globalization” movement,
composed of many of the world’s poor, working poor, and activists,
advocates for a truly democratic approach to globalization known as
“globalization from below.” Structured this way, the ongoing process
of globalization would reflect the values of the world’s majority,
rather than those of its elite minority.

GRAMMAR APPROACH:

Grammar Approach

The Noun (Definition, Number, Gender, Types)

Definition: A noun is a word used to refer to people,

animals, objects, substances, states, events and feelings.
Nouns can be a subject or an object of a verb, can be
modified by an adjective and can take an article or
determiner.

For example:

• Table;
• Company;
• The building;
• An associate.
Nouns also denote abstract and intangible concepts.

For example:

• economy;
• reliability;
• evolution;
• technology, etc.

Noun Plurals
We are going to explain some rules that will help you to
form the plural forms of the nouns. The general rule is to
add "-s" to the noun in singular.
For example:

• Book – Books;
• House – Houses;
• Chair – Chairs.
When the singular noun ends in: -sh, -ch, -s, -ss, -x, -o we
form their plural form by adding "-es".

For example:

• sandwich – sandwiches;
• brush – brushes;
• bus – buses;
• box – boxes;
• potato – potatoes.
When the singular noun ends in "y", we change the "y" for
"i" and then add "-es" to form the plural form. But do not
change the "y" for "ies" to form the plural when the
singular noun ends in "y" preceded by a vowel.

For exaample:

• day – days;
• toy – toys.
However, there are many Irregular Nouns which do not
form the plural in this way:

For exaample:

• Man – Men;
• Woman – Women;
• Child – Children.
Nouns may take an " 's" ("apostrophe s") or "Genitive
marker" to indicate possession. If the noun already has an -
s ending to mark the plural, then the genitive marker
appears only as an apostrophe after the plural form.

For example:

• my girlfriend's brother;
• John’s house;
• The Browns' house;
• The boys' pens.
The genitive marker should not be confused with the " 's "
form of contracted verbs, as in John's a good student =
John is a good student.

Noun Gender

Many common nouns, like "engineer" or "teacher", can

refer to men or women. Once, many English nouns would
change form depending on their gender. For example: A
man was called an "author" while a woman was called an
"authoress".

For example:

• David Garrick was a very prominent eighteenth-

century actor.
• Sarah Siddons was at the height of her career as an
actress in the 1780s.
• The manager was trying to write a want ad, but he
couldn't decide whether he was advertising for a
"waiter" or a "waitress".
Types of Nouns

Proper nouns are the names of specific things, people, or

places, such as Jhon, France. They usually begin with a
capital letter.

Common nouns are general names such as person,

mansion, and book. They can be either concrete or abstract.

Concrete nouns refer to things which you can sense such as

clock and telephone.

Abstract nouns refer to ideas or qualities such as liberty

and truth.

Countable nouns refer to things which can be counted (can

be singular or plural).

Uncountable nouns refer to some groups of countable

nouns, substances, feelings and types of activity (can only
be singular).

GENERALITIES UPON THE MAIN ELEMENTS

USED IN WRITING PROFESSIONAL LETTERS

In all fields of human activity – in which international

relations and European studies make no exception in this
point – professional correspondence includes several
specific elements, which are:

The heading

The heading is the return address to which the recipient

will refer when sending a response. The writer's name is
not included in the heading, as it is appears in the
complimentary close at the end of the letter. It should
include only the street, city, state and zip code of the letter
writer. Identifying words such as Avenue, Circle, Court,
Drive, and Street should be spelled out rather than
abbreviated. Doing so reduces the chances of a response
being sent to an incorrect address. The date a letter is
written should be placed below the writer's return address
information.

The inside address (the recipient address)

The inside address contains the mailing information

belonging to the recipient and should be justified to the left
margin of the letter and placed two spaces below the date
(for very short letters four spaces is acceptable).

As in the heading, the inside address includes the street,

city, state and zip code of the recipient, all of which should
be placed below the name of the business or organization
to whom the letter is being written. Identifying words such
as Avenue, Circle, Court, Drive, and Street should be
spelled out rather than abbreviated.

When the recipient' name, title and position are known,

they should be included as the first two lines in the inside
address and placed directly above the name of the
organization.

The salutation

The salutation is a formal greeting. Its placement belongs

two spaces below the inside address and it is always
justified to the left margin of the letter. It should include
the title and full name of the recipient, followed by a colon.
Customarily, the salutation begins with Dear, followed by
a title such as Mr., Ms., Mrs.; however, when the writer is
on a first name basis with the recipient, that formality can
be dropped in favour of a first name.

The titles of Mr., Ms., Mrs., and Dr. are always

abbreviated. Other titles, such as Professor and Senator are
never abbreviated. Regardless of their marital status,
women are increasingly more addressed in formal
correspondence as Ms.-the only exception being when the
recipient has personally expressed a desire to be addressed
otherwise (Miss or Mrs.).

Avoid gender-based salutations when it is not known if the

recipient is a man or a woman. Dear Student: Dear
Customer: Dear Resident: etc. are perfectly acceptable
options for gender-neutral correspondence.

An impersonal device may be preferable when addressing

a letter to a large organization where the recipient's name is
not likely to be known. For example, Attention: Accounts
Receivable or Subject: Billing Error may replace more
familiar forms of greeting.

The salutation, To Whom It May Concern: is very out of

date and too 20th Century-oriented to be used in
contemporary letters.

The body
Begin the body of a business letter two spaces below the
salutation or attention-getting device. Each paragraph
should be single-spaced and justified to the left margin of
the page with a double space separating each paragraph.
It is acceptable to double space the text of a letter when the
body is very short. This is done purely for cosmetic
reasons, giving the letter a more visually balanced
appearance on the page. In such instances it is appropriate
to indent the first line of each paragraph.

The complementary close

The complimentary close is placed two spaces below the

last line of a letter's body.
Customary expressions used to close a formal business
letter include Thank you, Sincerely, Sincerely yours, and
Yours truly. Less formal expressions such as Regards, Best
regards, and Best wishes should be used only when the
writer is addressing a business associate that is also a
friend.
When the expression contains two words, such as Thank
you, only the first word receives an initial upper case letter
A comma follows all forms of a complimentary close.
Allow four spaces between the complimentary close and
the typed version of the writer's full name. The space
between is reserved for a handwritten signature. The
writer's job position or title should appear directly below
his or her name.
The writer's signature should be identical to the printed
version except in those situations where the recipient is
also a friend, in which case a first name only is fine.

The additional notation

A number of situations call for a business letter to be

marked with notations signifying those situations. These
notations should be placed two spaces below the position
or title line following the writer's printed signature.
When a letter references one or more documents that are
enclosed by the writer for the recipient, the enclosure is
noted in one of the following ways:
• Enclosure: Wholesale Pricing Packet;
• Enclosures (5);
• Enc. (Encs.).
When a letter has been dictated to an assistant it should be
initialled. Both writer and assistant are acknowledged with
their personal initials. The writer's will appear in uppercase
letters and the assistant's will appear in lowercase letters in
one of the following ways:
• EIB: pjc;
• IMK/pjc.
When copies of a letter are sent to named business
associates or other interested parties, the copy recipients
are acknowledged with their full name as in the following
example.
cc: Ms. Annie Getz
cc: Mr. Glenn Widget, Ms. Ida Mae Knott

Further Details

It is very easy to learn the basics of good professional

correspondence.
The following data refer to those phrases that are usually
found in any standard official letters. This kind of phrases is
used as an introduction to the content of professional letters
and stand for their structural frame.
A difficult part of writing successful letters is, in fact, the
way of considering one’s very aim or objective in writing
them.
By using these types of standard phrases, students in
international relations and European studies can give an
academic or professional tone to their English letters.
Once students understand these basics, they can use this
frame in writing different types of letters and also refine
their linguistic skills so as to meet their future needs as
employers, employees or researchers.
The Start of the Letter

Dear Sir or Madam: (use this if you don't know who you
are writing to)
Dear Mr. or Mrs. Director, (use this if don't know his or
her name but you are aware of his or her title)
Dear Dr, Mr, Mrs, Miss or Ms X: (use this if you know who
you are writing to, and have a formal relationship with )
Dear Michael: (use this if the person is a close contact or a
friend of yours)
