3. Developmental Activities
a. Activity Class I want you to find a partner, you can
(By pair activity) choose your seatmate. You will find the
area of the following shape with
dimensions together with your partner.
Write your answers on your notebook or
any sheets of paper. Then later on, I will
call someone to show their solutions on
the board and explain their answer to the
class. Is the instruction clear class? Any
clarification? If none, find a partner. Does
everyone has a partner already? If so,
start answering now.
Directions: Find the area of the following
shapes given the dimensions.
1. 2. 3.
4cm
Are you done class? Who wants to show
their solutions on the board? Number
one? Yes Mikko. Number two is Emma,
and the last number is Reymark. Then
explain your solution to the class.
Very good! Your answers are all correct!
Again, how did you solve the area of
these shapes? Correct, using the formula
for the area of square and circle, and
other known shapes.
But, what if I give you this unknown curve
shape?
Will you still be able to find the area of the
shaded region with your prior knowledge
about area?
b. Analysis One of the application of definite integral
is finding the area of a region between two
curves. But how?
Case 1. Upper Function minus Lower
Function
Let f(x) and g(x) be continuous functions
over an interval [a,b] such that f(x)≥g(x) on
[a,b] . We want to find the area between
the graphs of the functions, as shown in
figure below.
𝑏
𝐴 = ∫𝑎 [𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥)] 𝑑𝑥
Note: this formula considers that an upper
function is 𝑓(𝑥) while the lower function is
𝑔(𝑥).
Case 2: Right-most Curve minus Left-
most Curve
Let f(y) and g(y) be continuous curves
over an interval [c,d] such that f(y)≥g(y) on
[c,d] . We want to find the area between
the graphs of the functions, as shown in
figure below.
Source: http://bitly.ws/rXKQ
𝑑
𝐴 = ∫𝑐 [𝑓(𝑦) − 𝑔(𝑦)] 𝑑𝑦
Note: this formula considers a right-most
curve 𝑓(𝑦) and a left-most curve is 𝑔(𝑦).
Also the term “curve” was used here in
case 2 instead of a “function” considering
the formal definition of a function.
Let’s have an example
Determine the area below 𝑓(𝑥) = 3 +
2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 and above the x-axis.
Graph
Upper function: 𝑓(𝑥) = 3 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2
Lower function: x-axis or y=0
Since we weren’t given any limits on x in
the problem statement, we’ll need to get
those. We can just equate the two
functions then solve for x.
3 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 = 0
−(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 3) = 0
𝑥 = −1, 𝑥 = 3
The area is,
3
𝐴 = ∫ 3 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 𝑑𝑥
−1
1
𝐴 = [3(3) + (3)2 − (3)3 ]
3
− [3(−3) + (−3)2
1
− (−3)3 ]
3
32
𝐴= 𝑠𝑞. 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠
3
Let’s have another example,
Determine the area to the left of 𝑔(𝑦) =
3 − 𝑦 2 and to the right of 𝑥 = −1.
Graph
Right function: 𝑔(𝑦) = 3 − 𝑦 2
Left function: 𝑥 = −1.
Since we weren’t given any limits on y in
the problem statement we’ll need to get
those.
3 − 𝑦 2 = −1
−𝑦 2 = −4
𝑦2 = 4
𝑦 = 2, 𝑦 = −2
The area is,
2
𝐴 = ∫ [(3 − 𝑦 2 ) − (−1)]𝑑𝑦
−2
2
𝐴 = ∫ 3 − 𝑦 2 + 1𝑑𝑦
−2
1
𝐴 = [3(2) − (2)3 + 2]
3
1
− [3(−2) − (−2)3 − 2]
3
32
𝐴= 𝑠𝑞. 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠
3
Let’s have another example, who wants to
graph the region bounded
by y=8x, y=2x and x=4.
Regie please graph the given, then shade
the area to be solve.
That is correct!
Next, who wants to solve the area?
Yes Christian.
Very good! That is correct, the area of the
shaded region bounded by
y=8x, y=2x and x=4 is approximately 6.45
sq. units.
Do you understand class? Do you have
any questions?
c. Abstraction What are the two cases in solving area
using definite integral? And when to
appropriately use the two cases?
Yes, Ana. Very good that’s correct.
How can we find the intersection known
as the boundaries of the region bounded
by two or more functions?
Yes, Emma. Very good, that is correct.
It seems like you really understand the
lesson.
Let us move on to our next activity.
d. Application Let’s have a group activity, I want you to
solve the following problem with your
group. Then write it in the manila paper, it
should be visible from the backseats. After
answering, you are going to paste your
answers on the board and I will call
someone later on to explain your answer,
two representative for every group. One
representative to discuss the graph, and
another one for the explaination of the
solution. Is the instruction clear class?
Good, let’s start. Group one will answer
number 2 and group 2 will answer item
number 1. You have 7 mins to do task.
Time starts now.
Directions: Determine the area of the
region bounded by the given set of
curves.
1. 𝑥 = 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 − 6
and 𝑥 = 2𝑦 + 4
2. 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 2, 𝑦 =
𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑥), 𝑥 =
−1 and 𝑥 = 2
Okay time is up, paste your solutions on
the board.
We’ll start with group 2, the presentors are
Ailene and Mikko
Very good, your answer is correct. Please
give a clap for group 2.
Next is group 1, the two presentors are
Aimee and Clarence.
Very good, your answer is also correct.
Please give a clap for group 1.
Thank you class for your participation.
Did you understand the lesson today
class? Do you have any questions or any
clarifications about our topic? If none, get
your quiz notebook and let’s have a short
quiz.
IV. Assessment/Evaluation Directions: Answer the problem below for
5 mins.

bounded by 𝑥 = 𝑦 2 + 1, 𝑥 = 5, 𝑦 =
−3 and 𝑦 = 3.
V. Assignment Directions: Determine the area of the
region bounded by the given set of
curves.

1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = −2.
2. 𝑓(𝑥)= 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑥 and
𝑔(𝑥)=cos𝑥 over the
interval [0,𝜋].
3. 𝑦 = 4𝑥 + 3, 𝑦 = 6 − 𝑥 −
