choice. Students will label the producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers, and

Activity Students will investigate living and nonliving organisms
and how they react together in an ecosystem; section B
of standard 4.3 highlights food webs. Students will be
asked to create a food web for an ecosystem of their
choice. Within the food web, students will be required to
identify/label the producers, primary consumers,
secondary consumers, tertiary consumers, and
decomposers. The teacher will introduce this concept by
asking the students “Where do we get our energy?” This
discussion will prompt students to ask questions and
answer, “food!” From this, the teacher will ask students
“where does our food come from?” and “what gives them
energy? "Next, the teacher will read the book Pass the
Energy, please! by Barbara McKinney. Following the
reading, the teacher will create a food web working
backwards from a human with students on the white
board. For the at home project, students will use the free
diagram features on Creately.com to create their own
food web diagram. If students are unable to use
Creately, they are permitted to use the app Flowdia
Diagrams.
The food web diagram should include the following
elements:
1. A title
2. A food web containing at least 5 species
3. Each species should be listed/identified under
producers, primary consumers, secondary
consumers, tertiary consumers, or decomposers.
