TECHNICAL MANUAL
INTRODUCTION.
Types of scaffolds requiring design are those which fall outside the range fully specified in the relevant
Scaffolding code of practice”
There are however a number of scaffold types or elements within scaffolds that do not fall within the range
covered in BS 5973 : 1993 but are required on a regular basis. This manual has been produced to provide a
series of typical designs and technical information to assist withthe erection of scaffolding which falls into this
category
This manual is supplementary to and should be read in conjunction with BS 5973 : 1993.
It does not substitute or replace it.
All sketches and information contained within this manual must be read in conjunction with the following notes
4. This manual is confidential and is the exclusive property of Cape PLC. No unauthorised use, copy or
disclosure, either in full or in part, is to be made without the prior permission in writing from the CAPE
Design Office.
2, The information contained in this manual must be checked, prior to erection to ensure
that it fully satisfies the requirements and that all loadings, dimensions, details,
erection and dismantling sequences, etc. are correct and practicable, No alteration
in loading oF layout is to be made without reference to the CAPE Design Office.
3. The customer must ensure that the foundations provided are adequate to support the
loads imposed. No spreaders or other means of distributing the imposed loads except
base plates and sole boards, are supplied by CAPE, who accept no responsibility for
the consequences of defective foundations.
4, Where Cape PLC equipment is supported or suspended from an existing structure, e.g,
roofs, steels, balconies, upper floors, etc., the customer must ensure that the
existing structure is adequate to safely support the additional imposed loads.
5. The customer is to ensure that adequate facilities for tying or anchoring the
scaffold are made available and that the structure, building, ground or concrete
to which the scaffold is tied or anchored is capable of withstanding the additional
imposed loads,
6. The customer is to design, supply and fix all necessary auxiliary equipment, e.g
shuttering, timber bearers, steel joists, etc, and to ensure that itis capable of
safely transmitting the loads axially to the scaffold tubes.
7. No sheeting, wind protection or fans, etc., to be added to the structures detailed
in this manual. Where such is required, the provision of adequate ties and anchors
must be arranged specifically with the CAPE Design Office.
8. All working platforms and access ladders must be at all mes in compliance with
the relevant statutory regulations.
9. Unless otherwise stated, all work must comply with the code of practice.

TM5/1DFULLY BOARDED INDEPENDENT TIED SCAFFOLDS
This section gives details of fully boarded independent tied scaffolds within the following parameters :~
Maximum Lift Height =20m
Maximum Width Of Platform = 5 Boards or 4 Boards + 1 Inside
Maximum Height Of Scaffold =30m
Maximum No. Of Working Lifts = 6 No.
Loadings = 0,75 kN/m? (Very Light Duty - TM6/3)
= 1.50 kN/m? (Light Duty - TM6/4)
= 2.00 kN/m? (General Purpose - TM6/5)
The Technical Manual sheet number TM6/2 indicates dimension and details of scaffolds and should be
read in conjunction with the relevant table (Technical Manual sheets TM6/3, TM6/4 or TM6/5). All
unspecified details must comply with BS 5973.
Tables on Technical Manual sheets TM6/3, TM6/4 and TM6/S indicate the maximum loadings per
standard imposed on the foundations for each different case. All cases assume even loading of
standards. Figures above or to the left of the bold zig-zag line indicate the maximum permitted height
with single standards. For cases below or to the right of the bold zig-zag line, double standards must
be fitted to sufficient height to limit the extent of single standards as above.
The figures used in these tables are based on the use of new or galvanized tube.
EXAMPLES :
1) Very light duty independent (0.75 kNim2), 30 m high (15 No. Lifts), fully boarded, 5 No. working
lifts, maximum centres of standards = 2.7 m
From table on technical manual sheet no, TM6/3 :-
Maximum standard load = 2410 kg
(Above and to the left of the bold zig-zag line, therefore single standards okay)
2) General purpose independent (2.0 kN/m?), 30 m high (15 No. lifts), fully boarded, 5 No. working
lifts, maximum centres of standards = 2.1m
From table on technical manual sheet no. TM6/5 :-
Maximum standard load = 2848 kg
Maximum allowable height with single standards = 24 m (12 No. lifts).
Therefore fit double standards to lift No. 3.
Where there is a likelihood of uneven distribution of loading or excessive snow load, contact the CAPE
Design Department.

SE TTT GENERAL PURPOSE (2.0kN/m*)USE OF UNIT BEAMS AND LADDER BEAMS
GENERAL NOTES
1) All joining of unit beams must be by the use of nuts, bolts and washers as specified
by the manufacturer. All holes in fish plates must be fitted with the correct nuts, bolts
and washers. Omission of any of these bolts could be disastrous. On no account
will lap tubes with couplers be accepted in place of bolts.
2
Ladder beams must never be joined end to end with sleeve couplers and / or spliced.
If ladder beams are too short to achieve the required span, then unit beams must be
used.
2
Each end of span should extend through a minimum of 2 uprights and all connections
must be made at node points. Both chords must be fixed to uprights with load
bearing couplers, with a min. of 1 check transom (see fig below).

4
Horn ends of unit beams must never be extended. If unit beams are too short, add on
an additional beam to make up to the required length.
2
When constructing a scaffold off bridged unit beams or ladder beams, each
puncheon tube must be connected to both top and bottom chords with load bearing
couplers, with a min. of 1 check fitting
2
For permissible span and centres of unit beams and ladder beams refer to the CAPE
Design Department.
7) Alluse of ladder beams and unit beams to form cantilevered structures must be
teferred to the CAPE Design Department.

When used as bridging beams :-
Lace every 1220 mm (4'0") on the top chord and every 2440 mm (8'0") on the bottom chord
Always fit lacing tubes at node points.
Plan Bracing
Must be connected near lacing tubes.
Must run full length of beams.
Must be fitted at a frequency of one run of bracing per 5 No. beams and in each end bay.
Section Bracing.
One brace connected to top and bottom chords is required at the same frequency as for plan
bracing and every 3600 mm (12'0") along the beam

GUIDANCE NOTES
All Temporary Lifting Frames constructed with scaffolding materials, must comply
with the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regs 1998 (LOLER).
The Client is to be responsible for ensuring that all statutory regulations regarding
lifting appliances, gear & operations are complied with.(including all tests,
inspections & certification).
Before being put into use for the first time, the lifting frame needs to be subjected
to a thorough examination by the competent Scaffold Inspector. This should be a
more stringent examination than a routine scaffold inspection and should
incorporate a check to ensure that all members are in position and where
practicable, vital couplers i.e. those supporting the key lifting parts, should be
physically checked for tightness. Before attempting to carry out this operation, the
Scaffold Inspector must ensure that a safe means of access and egress has been
provided
The Inspector shall then complete a green scafftag insert and place it in the
holder, which must be securely attached in a prominent position on the scaffold
The green Scafitag insert must be clearly marked with the safe working load, as.
stated on the design drawing (SWL) which may be imposed on the lifting point of
the frame. Note - dependent on the type of lifting gear being used, this may be
different to (i.e. greater than) the maximum load to be lifted. A record of all
inspections must be documented in the scaffold register.
This examination should then be repeated every 7 days, or sooner if there is any
concern that the integrity of the structure may have been affected in any way.
(Note - unless stated otherwise on the design drawing, this should be determined
in consultation with the competent person for lifting operations and may require
an additional inspection prior to every ift
In addition, a further thorough examination needs to be made by a competent
person for lifting operations, when the lifting equipment is rigged and in position
and prior to lifting. This is the responsibility of the Rigger or the user of the
equipment. The competent person may, in most (but not all) cases require that a
carefully controlled test is conducted, before the frame is used

SCALE ATS | SusPenneo Paow SeRUCrURAs STEEL 717/60GUIDANCE NOTES FOR TYING OF
SCAFFOLD STUCTURES
Introduction.
Means of resisting inward and outward movement should be provided for scaffold structures. This
will normally be by attachment with ‘ties’ to a facade or structure at a number of points. It should be
established that the strength of the building or structure at the location of a tie is adequate to sustain
‘the loads which will be transferred to it. Where the structure and its components are strong enough,
permission should be sought to use ties. A Tie consists of a tie member, normally a tube, and an
anchorage. Various types of ties are given in BS5973 : 1993 Clause 9.4.
1.0 This Guidance is seperated into 2 sections, which give tie frequencies and arrangement
notes, as follows:
Section 1; Applies to unsheeted scaffold structures (See TM18/02d)
Section 2; Applies to sheeted scaffold structures (See TM18/03d)
2.0 The tie frequencies given in this guidance are based upon wind loads derived from
BS6399-2 : 1997
3.0 The recommendations given in Tables 1 + 2 are for Unsheeted scaffolds less than 30m high
and Sheeted scaffolds less than 15m high . If scaffolds are higher they should be specially
designed.
4.0 Ties should be evenly distributed over the scaffold, both horizontally and vertically. The
spacing of lines of ties should not exceed 8.0m, either vertically or horizontally, but individual
ties should still be within the area rules. Where the building surface permits a staggered
arrangement of ties, this should be adopted in preference to a rectangular pattem.
5.0 All scaffolds should be erected and adequately tied. These ties should then be left
undisturbed until the scaffold is dismantled. However where it is necessary to remove a tie,
even temporarily, the scaffold will be less secure, and accordingly a higher provision of ties
will be required. If in any doubt contact the CAPE design department.
6.0 The type of tie and anchorage should be selected from those given in; BS5973: 1993,
clause 9.4.2 to 9.4.5 to suit the tying requirements and the nature of the facade.

UNSHEETED SCAFFOLDS
Section 1: Unsheeted Scaffolds.
This Guidance applies to unsheeted scaffolds less than 30m high situated in areas where the basic
wind speed does not exceed 25m/s and 31m/s respectively. It only applies to scaffold structures
situated in areas where the site ground level does not exceed +100m above sea level, that are to
remain erected for less than a 12month period
Where any of these parameters are exceeded, or if you are in any doubt, then special advice should
be sought from the CAPE Design Department.

1.1 Asufficient number of ties should be installed on each scaffold to ensure at least the relevant
frequency is achieved (subject to a minimum of 2)
4.2 The spacing of lines of ties should not exceed 8 metres, both horizontally and vertically, but
individual ties must still be within the area rule as stated above,
1.3. Each tie must have a minimum load bearing capacity, as shown in the table above, of either
6.3KN (safe working load equivalent to the slip of 1 load bearing coupler) or
12.6 KN (safe working load equivalent to the slip of 2 load bearing couplers) in both directions.
1.4 Where necessary, ties should be so positioned and / or supplemented with adequate bracing to
resist movement of the scaffold in both transverse and longitudinal directions and where
necessary, against uplift.
1.5 Where scaffolds are situated near the comers of buildings or structures, or near the edges of
decks etc., where the wind tends to be accelerated, then double the number of ties stated in
the above table should be fitted.
