Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents an overview of the study, its background, the framework utilized, the general and
specific problem statements, the study’s significant, scope and limitations, and the key terminologies
operationally defined for the benefit of understanding this research report.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Allison Academy "Technology is playing an increasing role at all levels of education, from
elementary school to higher education. Technology greatly improves and facilitates the transfer of
knowledge, which allows teachers to design a quality learning management system. One of the biggest
challenges in education is taking care of each student in the classroom. It is not an easy task, especially
in classes with a large number of students where each of them has their own unique talents, and needs.
With education technology, students can access online information more easily, while learning itself is
more reliant on multimedia than ever before. Indeed, there are many ways technology can help
students have a great learning experience. Technology impact is perhaps best visible in the learning
process. Not only is it easier to find any information online, but the information now comes in different
formats. It is no longer necessary to go to the library and spend hours there searching for the desired
information. Now all this information is largely digitized and available online which greatly facilitates the
learning process, writing professional papers, and acquiring new knowledge in general.

The new generation or also known as Gen-Z is known for its advance knowledge, especially when it
comes to Technology. As per 4th year Hospitality students from Liceo De Masbate , became the center
piece of the researcher’s topic, because Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management is one of the
most arduous course in college, hence, the researchers covet to know of how the technology influence
and affect them in learning and how they manage their time when it comes to entertainment and school
works using technology.
Technology can make the students life easier and accessible, however, having a technology without
electricity is futile. Brown outs and black outs are often and relentless in this town of Masbate. One of
the immense problems of the students is the electricity especially this time of pandemic where
electrified technology is being used like wireless fidelity and smart phones. Hence, excessive use of
technology may affect and influence the learning process of the students. There is a strong consensus
that digital technology can improve teaching and learning by motivating students with engaging,
interactive, and fun learning environments. For example, digital technology offers new avenues of
meaningful communication and collaboration between teachers and students. Technology enhances
many learning opportunities and allows for student comfort but can also be a tool that is too heavily
relied on and can potentially effect student fine motor development and problem-solving skills. While
learning environments of the past primarily consisted of textbooks, lectures and the occasional video
presentation, today's classrooms can make use of various digital tools, including tablets, apps,
interactive whiteboards and videos to help students gain insights on materials.

The purpose of this study is to help the students to understand the new concepts in new easy ways of
using technology. To know it's impact on the learning process on the 4th year hospitality students in
Liceo De Masbate. To increase the idea or information of how it will benefit the students in their
academic of using technology and its good impact. To enhance the intelligence and capabilities of the
researcher in this study. This study will attempt to discuss and outline the role of technology in academic
learning and show the importance of using technology for the students, especially in the field of
academic.
Statement of the Problem

This study will determine and identify the influence and effects of technology in the learning process of
the 4th year hospitality students of Liceo de Masbate .

This study will pursue to answer the following questions:

1.What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1.Age?

1.2.Gender?

1.3.Section?

2. Does technology affect your daily lifestyle in a bad way at school?

3. How does brownout affect students studies?

4. What are the disadvantages of using technologies as a main tool of learning?

5. On what way does the technology can influence and affect the learning process of the students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students: The benefits of using educational technology also include the improvement of learners’
mental and physical health. By using these tools, students are able to enhance their learning and their
cognitive skills, which in turn help them improve their academic performance as well as their physical
health.
Instructor: Computer programs can compile and analyze student data and results, saving the teacher
both time and resources. The Educational Broadcasting Cooperation comments that teachers can make
use of technology to track student progress and improve their own performance and lesson plans.

School Administrators: For administrative tasks, technology can improve worker productivity by
removing repetitive aspects of complex tasks or improving system communication. Technology
integration in the classroom also has the potential to support important educational goals.

Future Researchers: In the past, many researchers could not come up with adequate or accurate data
for their projects, but nowadays technology has made it possible for researchers to access information
online and make use of various computer software and equipment which help them to analyze and
manage their research data and thereby realize their projects in less than no time and with minimal
flaws.
Theoretical Framework

Figure 1. Shows the theoretical framework of this study.

The following theories will be adapted to further testify and corroborate the points and ideas made
within the scopes and bounds what our study will cover.

CONCEPTUAL THEORY

John Dewey (1852-1952), Jean Piaget (1896-1980), Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934)

The Constuctivism theory emphasizes that good and real learning information is not based on what the
instructors say, or the learner heard. This is because each learner has its own methods, way of
understanding, and experiences to build knowledge, which affects the learning processing.
Constructivism theory is one of the most effective theories that help learners construct and build their
own knowledge. Learners build meaning and knowledge through joining groups, collaborating, and
engaging with others. The impact will be much more especially if this theory integrates with technology.
Technology will become more advantageous as result.

SITUATED LEARNING THEORY

Jean Lave et Etienne Wenger (c.1990s)

The concept of situated cognition highlights the importance of cognitive apprenticeship learning from
experts. Situated learning allows students to interact with real-world problem-solving situations.
According to Jean Lave, Lev Vygotsky, John Dewey, and Etienne Wenger, learning happens in situational
circumstances. Situated learning gives students the chance to engage with real-life, problem-solving
contexts. Technology is becoming more linked to situated learning. The idea of learning a certain trade
using technology is similar to how people learned from a professional in the past. These same activities
can be done with a computer or other comparable device thanks to technological advancements.
Individual interaction via the computer is another way to make situated learning more successful.

GAGNE’S THEORY OF INSTRUCTION

Robert Gagne (1916-2002) & Discroll (1994)

Financial statement

The effects of social media to the students of Liceo de Masbate fourth year Hospitality Management
students can be multifaceted. On the positive side, it facilitates communication and information sharing.
However, excessive use may lead to decreased academic performance due to distractions. Additionally,
social media can contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, as students may
face social comparison and cyber bullying. Balancing the benefits and drawbacks is crucial for a
comprehensive understanding of its financial implications for students, considering potential costs
related to mental health services and academic support.
