Promoting solid waste

management in public
schools
Education is key. Children need to be properly trained and educated to learn how to live
differently than what they see in their current surroundings. Well guided children learn better and
can step up to create a change in their environment.

Nestlé PH believes in the power of education for change - this belief drives the company in
accelerating its efforts to teach proper solid waste management (SWM) for use by parents to help
educate their children and local government units to teach their constituents.

These efforts are a component of Nestlé Wellness Campus (NWC), the company's flagship
advocacy program in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd). It aims to uplift the
lives of Filipino families through nutrition, health and wellness, as well as environmental
education. Under NWC, Nestlé PH is helping students to learn and apply seven healthy habits
including: choosing nutritious and varied options; managing food portions; choosing to drink
water and milk; enjoying meals together as a family; playing actively; keeping good hygiene; and
caring for the planet.
According to Christine Ponce-Garcia, Assistant Vice President and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé
PH, modules on SWM, developed in collaboration with the National Solid Waste Management
Commission, were designed to teach Grade 1 to 10 students to practice the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse
and Recycle.

"We reaffirm our commitment to raise happy, healthy and environmentally responsible children.
They are the future stewards of our planet. We need to educate them as early as possible to be
more mindful of the waste we generate and to become more aware of ways to properly segregate
and manage waste in school, at home and in their communities," shared Ponce-Garcia.

Nationwide reach, overall impact

Kevin Carpio, NWC Program Lead, shared that all of the program's modules have been given to
public school teachers for implementation in their classes.

"The Solid Waste Management modules were rolled out as part of the NWC for the first time this
school year 2021-2022. We are grateful to the DepEd for providing us a platform that can reach
millions of students, helping to shape their understanding of health and wellness while instilling
the importance of caring for our environment," said Carpio.

Teacher Sheena Lyn Briones of Naga Central School II said the SWM modules have inspired
their students to make eco-bricks from segregated waste.
"It is one thing to be able to teach our students the value of proper waste disposal. But what
brings me more pride and joy is the fact that they were eager to create something useful out of the
plastic waste and other trash collected in our school," Briones shared.

Cleanliness which promotes good health in learners in schools has become paramount
considering the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and its adverse effects on learners learning
abilities and success. Also, cleanliness seems to have a link with security. Hence, the study
explored the connection between cleanliness, security and the learning abilities of learners. In
other words, attempt was made to investigate the relationship that exists between cleanliness in
classroom, school environment, learners' habit and their academic performances. Qualitative
method was adopted for the study. Purposive sampling was used to select three rural and three
urban schools in KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. Meanwhile, convenience sampling was
used to select six educators who participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were
employed for data collection. The findings of the study suggest firstly that there is a link between
security and cleanliness, and such is the reason why most urban high schools experience more
cleanliness than their counterparts in rural communities. Secondly, cleanliness is a contributory
factor which enhances the learning abilities of learners. Cleanliness which is upheld more in
urban high schools compared to rural based high schools contributes towards boosting teaching
and learning activities as well as the academic performances of learners. The paper therefore
recommends amongst others that better security should be considered in and for rural based
high schools. Cleanliness should be treated with esteem in high schools and at all levels. Also,
learners should be taught personal hygiene as one of the co-curricular subjects.

The Importance of Cleanliness in

School
17 January 2020

The importance of cleanliness in school is to provide a healthy and safe environment for
students. There are many issues related to hygiene that students and school employees have
to face every day. Germs and bacteria are a part of life. Especially when discussing kids.
Most of those can even harm them for life or affect the social and economic well-being of the
school.

As the facility manager or the headmaster of a school, you need to make sure that the school
building always stays clean. From classrooms and hallways to cafeteria and administrative
offices, you and your staff must maintain the cleanliness in your school every day. For many
students and teachers, they spend most of their time at school. So, maintaining cleanliness in
school is vital for many reasons.

Better Environment for Learning

Creating an environment that is conducive to teaching means ensuring your lecture halls,
classrooms, study, and living areas are all kept clean and tidy. Messy and dirty classes not
only present a poor image, but they can also be distracting and negatively impact the pride
students have in your school. What if the school fails to provide a clean environment? It
means your school fails to provide the basic needs for the health and success of your students.
Schools not only impart knowledge but also play a significant role in shaping the personality
of an individual. What a student learns in school is not just confined to the four walls of a
classroom, but the whole school environment is a source of knowledge. Apart from
education, a student learns lessons of discipline, honesty, and cleanliness from school.
Therefore, a school needs to maintain a hygienic atmosphere.

Different cleaning tasks assigned to the students weekly help to keep the class clean and
create a comfortable environment to study. While they learn to maintain a healthy
environment in school, they will also carry out the same habit of keeping their space clean at
home. Timetables, different settings, and the coming and going of hundreds of students and
staff need to be taken into account before creating a cleaning schedule.

Not to mention the administration required for hiring and processing cleaning staff, which
can be a full-time job in itself. Thus, more schools are outsourcing cleaning to external
companies, ensuring high standards and a better environment all the time. Students are not
the only ones who benefit from a clean and tidy school environment. Your school serves as
your teachers’ workplace, and they deserve to look forward to each new day.

They perform their jobs better when they aren’t distracted by substandard surroundings.
Teachers are more productive when they interact with children in healthy, clean classrooms
compared to the opposite one. They are also less likely to become ill or suffer allergy
symptoms in a neat school. Healthy, focused teachers will do a better job of teaching and are
less likely to miss work. Maintaining schools cleanliness is a simple way to enhance learning
for students, improve job satisfaction for teachers, reduce illness, and fight allergy symptoms.

Promote Academic Success

Most people can study and work effectively with the clutter surrounding them, but some
people prefer a tidy, organized workspace. Students are no different. In the organized space,
students can think in a more organized manner, leading to enhanced learning. A recent
study highlighted the relationship between cleanliness and learning. The researchers polled
college students, asking them which of four levels of cleanliness they preferred when
learning.

Eighty-eight per cent of students reportedly became distracted by moderate inattention to

cleanliness in their learning environment. Simple things like unswept floors, the buildup of
dirt in corners, and smudge marks on surfaces were distracting. So, what level of cleanliness
do students prefer? Eighty-four per cent in the study sample preferred what the researchers
called Orderly Spotlessness.

The floors were shining clean, all surfaces were smudge and dust-free, and trash cans
contained only waste from that day. While this study was conducted on college students, it is
safe to assume that younger students will also learn better in a clean environment.

Fewer Absences and Sick Days

When the students get sick, the teacher and staff do too. Keeping the school clean can help
slow the spread of illness and reduce the number of students and teachers who fall ill. The flu
virus can live on surfaces for 48 hours after it is deposited, infecting students who touch that
surface. Simple cleaning and organization are not enough in this case. The cleaning staff must
use disinfectant cleaners that kill germs on surfaces.

They must also know which surfaces to target – primarily surfaces that are touched often, like
desks, doorknobs, computer keyboards, and hands-on learning tools. That is one of the
advantages of outsourcing the experts that understand cleaning methods and tools. When
students are better protected from the flu and the common cold, they are better able to learn
and less likely to be absent from school.

Studies are frequently released on the cleanliness of school cafeterias, as they can be hot
spots for germs and bacteria with hundreds of children using them daily (Breann Marvin-
Loffing, 2016). For many students, the meal they have in the school’s canteen is the only
proper meal they have each day. As such, the cafeteria is one place in the school that needs to
be kept cleaner than any other site in the compound.

For an efficient cleaning job, it’s advisable to hire the services of professional cleaners for
your school. With such services, there is a guarantee that the job will be done to the expected
standards. Dirty canteen will invite pests and decrease food safety. Some steps you can take
to minimize the risk of an infestation are keeping food areas clean and routinely emptying
bins. However, if an infestation takes hold, a professional pest control team will need to be
called in to eliminate the pest safely. Well-kept cleanliness in your school’s cafeteria and
kitchen will result in a decrease of absence students and teachers.

Healthier School Building

The number of students suffering from allergy and asthma symptoms has skyrocketed in
recent years, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Many
of these students are allergic or sensitive to dust mites, mould spores, and pollen. They have a
difficult time learning when they develop itchy eyes and a runny nose while in school.
Regular, thorough cleaning keeps the levels of allergens down, especially true in older
buildings where mould may be an issue.

If you don’t already have a well-developed cleaning program in place, it can be hard to
achieve goals and meet high standards. You can outsource a professional facilities
management company, handing over the responsibility and administration and taking
advantage of their experience and expertise in effective cleaning. It also means that your
management team can concentrate on core priorities, ensuring you can continue striving for
the academic success of your students.

Task 5

You were tasked to discuss the ways your school can help address environmental problems by writing an essay about
segregating waste, saving resources through recycling, and avoiding using harmful materials. The essay should be at least
300-500 words.

Being a role model to others on what we are doing is already considered as helping the environmental problems. As a
student, I taught there's no way that I can help with this issues. That's too big for a student like me to resolve it. But then I
realized, we can help on our environment on simple and good acts even though we're still student. So I made an essay based
on my research and my own experiences.

Wastes are materials that can be recycled on a regular basis. But because of our ignorance, a lot of waste gets dumped in
landfills and pollution hits the planet finally. Only if we start creating awareness and take self responsibility we can clean our
environment. For this, we have to learn to segregate our wastes on a daily basis. It is quite important to separate plastic
wastes from bio degradable wastes. Plastic wastes should be totally separated from natural wastes. Plastic wastes do not
decay like biodegradable wastes. Instead they take many years to breakdown even after which it is dangerous. On the other
side, we cannot destroy plastic wastes by burning. Plastic wastes emit poisonous smokes when they are burnt. So, it is high
time we avoid using synthetic materials. If not, we should try to segregate wastes and help in lessening the pollution level in
our environment. I'll leave the things that I applied doing a segrating wastes and the thing that I've searched.

SEGREGATING WASTES :

-It is important to segregate waste on a daily waste.

-Segregating waste means separating biodegradable wastes from non biodegradable wastes.

By this means, the wastes can be sorted and decomposed accordingly.

-The simplest way we can contribute as an individual is having two waste bins at home – one for bio – degradable wastes
another for non biodegradable wastes.

Recycling is a method of procedure that includes the collection and breaking down of waste material to create something
new out of it. The process was introduced sot that the non-biodegradable materials can be melted or break down to create
something useful.

Here are some tips:

-Paper- It is the most used material on the earth. Paper is made up of two materials water and wood. For recycling paper
firstly they break it down in small pieces and dissolve it into water. After that, they add chemicals that filter out the ink and
dirt from it. In addition after filtering the paper takes the form of a mush called the pulp and this pulp is later converted into
clean paper.

-Metals- The metals are first shredded into small pieces and then they were melted and after that remolded into new shapes.

-Glass- The recycling of glass is the easier they just break it into pieces and then they melt it and recast them.

-Plastic- They also follow the same process as plastic. But, the process of plastic recycling is a little bit complex because
they have to sort out the different types of plastics. As there is a diverse variety of plastic with different properties.

This are just a few ways on how we can help the environment. There is a lot of ways if we want to. We should act now
before it's too late. Apply it and you will see the result of your hardworks. I hope in this simple essay that I made, make you
realize you wrong doings and start correcting your wrong.

Task 3
You were asked by your guidance counselor to preside over a discusiion on ways to relieve
stress. Your discussion pf 250-300 words shall be presented to lower classmen in your school.
Stress is very well known to us students because of the many homeworks and requirements in
school that causing us lack of sleep and poor eating habit. Stress can lead to depression or death if
it is not prevented. Maybe a lot of people are experiencing stress but they can manage to go
through it. There are some ways or tips that I've searched to help everyone to relieve their stress.
First is to exercise. I know that we have a lot of things that are needed to do but we need to make
time for our health and for our physical fitnesses also. Second is take a deep breath. Don't
pressure yourself too much. Always think positive. Third is we need to eat well. Even though we
have a lot of works, we should maintain our healthy and strong body in order for us to survive
with all the works that we've been doing. Fourth is make a time management. You only have one
body and one mind functioning. You can't simultaneously do all of those in just a minute. You
need to have your time management so that you can do all the things orderly. And lastly is take a
break. Your mind and you body need to rest also. This tips are just simple ones but we needed all
of this for us to survive in everything we do in life. I hope that we can implement all of this in our
everyday lives. Thank you and Godbles

Reflection:
In the first place, I thought it is for our science project. But the moment he removed the message, I
started thinking why. Because of my curiousity, I came up with a guess. He's trying to tell someone
that he need space. And my guess went right.
Millennials now a days do this. They enjoy chatting and calling on messenger. How love is shaped
through chat? By knowing each other? Is that really enough?
For me, it is better to start something in a relationship personally and also end something personally.
Not chats. Not calls. Personal. I would rather courted by someone that knows the traditional courtship
than the one who's chatting me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And broke up personally so that
both of us can talk and to end the relationship properly.
Be matured enough with all the decisions that we are making
And for all of us, let us be careful to what we are sending and to whom we are sending that message.
Always be responsible. Let this scenery makes us realize that we are matyred enough to handle all
things that we are going through. Be careful and be responsible always
