Characteristics of NMOS and PMOS transistors
AIM:
To study the characteristics of NMOS and PMOS transistors.
TOOL USED:
Cadence-Virtuoso-6.1.8
PROCEDURE:
To create cell view in a new library
1. Open the terminal and type the following commands
csh
source |home|cad|cshrc
2. A “Welcome to Cadence Suite” appears. Now type the command
“virtuoso &” and press enter.
3. Library Manager work area window opens.
4. Create a new library as follows. File > New > Library and type the
name of the library.
5. A technology file Tab opens, select attach to existing technology
library. Another window opens, now select gpdk180 technology.
To create the Schematic and Symbol of NMOS:
1. Now select the “inv” library. Go to file→new→cell view and cell
name as “Nmos_dc_iv”. Make sure that the ‘Type’ is in schematic
mode, ‘view’ is set to schematic and the library file name is
included in it.
2. On clicking OK, Schematic L: Editing Window opens.
3. Create the schematic of transistor and check and save the
schematic.
4.Select gpdk180 library→ nmos→ symbol and mention the
specifications
5. Give Vdc taken from ‘Analoglib’. For the Vdc inputs set the value to
1.8v
6.Wiring is done for the circuit and the ground connection is given.
To plot the drain and transfer characteristics
1. Click on launch→ADE L. An ADE L tab opens.
2. Click analysis→dc.Choose: Save DC operating point →hystersis
sweep →component parameter →select component(Vgs) →vdc .
3. Edit the start and stop time and give step size as 0.3
4. In the ADE L tab, go to Outputs→to be plotted, select on the point
Vds and ID where the output is needed to be found.
5. Click on to generate netlist and run.
6. In the ADE L tab, variables -> copy from cell view. Then,
Tools-> parametric analysis.
7. The drain characteristics result waveform will appear.
8. Now in ADEL window to plot transfer characteristics by
parametric analysis by having various Vds values
9. In the ADE L tab, go to Outputs→to be plotted, select on the point
Vgs and ID where the output is needed to be found.
10.Click on to generate netlist and run.
11.The transfer characteristics result waveform will appear.
For PMOS:
For PMOS same procedure is followed by selecting PMOS component
from analoglib and assign Vdc as -1.8v.
Then drain and transfer characteristics results are obtained.
Characteristics of NMOS:
Drain characteristics– VDS vs ID
Transfer characteristics– VGS vs ID
Characteristics of PMOS:
Drain characteristics– VDS vs ID
Transfer characteristics– VGS vs ID
RESULT:
Thus, the transfer and drain characteristics of NMOS and PMOS have
been studied using the Cadence Virtuoso tool.
