The soil shall be dumped at one place and spread in specified thickness using suitable equipment or
manually.
Then the soil shall be graded using motor grader/other leveling equipment/manually to prepare an even
compacting layer.
Moisture content of the soil shall be checked and ensured prior to starting compaction.
Each layer shall be compacted by plate compactor / vibratory roller compactor/manual tamping to achieve
compaction of 95% of MDD at OMC [IS 2720- Part 28 – 1974 (Reaffirmed May 2020)].
Degree of compaction shall be determined using core cut / sand replacement method by hosting in house
tests.
Once the layer has attained the required compaction, subsequent layer compaction shall be carried out
similarly.
For backfilling around service laying areas, substrate should be necessarily compacted and then service
laying should be carried out.
After services are firmly laid and conducting necessary testing’s, if applicable sealing of service lines from
contaminations shall be carried out.
After the consecutive works are completed, inspected and signed off by necessary stakeholders the
backfilling activity shall be initiated for highlighted locations.
1.9 Procedure
Protection of MATERIAL:
reference points Sample from backfill earth shall be tested to identify optimum moisture content, the maximum
dry density (MDD), gradation and the percentage of the fines which should confirm with the
project specification. (i.e, acceptable particle size distribution of the fill is that having the
following percentage by mass passing through sieves of 300mm - 100%, 200mm – 30 to100%,
75mm – 10 to 50%, 20mm - 0 to 25%.)
The backfill material shall be pieces of hard durable rock, basalt is acceptable. Concrete,
masonry, brick and similar materials shall not be used. All material shall be agreed with the
engineer as suitable.
GENERAL:
Ensure backfilling area is barricaded as per project safety plan as applicable.
Backfilling around/above, masonry / concrete / hume pipe drain excavation shall be done with
approved material such as basalt or durable rock after concrete / masonry / hume pipe is fully
set and carried out in such a way as not to cause undue thrust on any part of the structure and /
or not to cause differential settlement and do not worn water proofing coating.
The backfill material shall be pieces of hard durable rock, basalt is acceptable. Concrete,
masonry, brick and similar materials shall not be used. All material shall be agreed with the
engineer as suitable.
All space between the walls, footings and other foundation structure, and the side of the
excavation shall be refilled to the original surface, making in layers not exceeding 400 mm
compacted thickness and brought to required density using suitable compaction tool /
equipment such as mechanical tamper, rammer or plate/roller compactor, as suitable.
For compaction, minimum vibrator capacity of 2.5 KN should be used and shall by at least 8

passes of a vibrating roller of over 2.5kn per 100mm traveling at less than 2km per hour.
For general fill, filling will be done not more than 400mm filling.
1.10 Inspection & Testing
Relevant inspection & testing shall be carried out in accordance with the attached ITP which summarizes various
characteristics to be checked at different stages of construction. QA/QC Engineer in coordination with Project/
Site Engineer shall ensure stage wise compliance of the requirements shown in ITP and record the result of
inspection in the attached checklist.
