A desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve a personal or
organizational desired end-point is a goal.
1.Goals Give Focus
Life is pointless and a waste of energy and effort without having goals. Having all the potential
in the world without focus leaves all the abilities and talents useless.
2. Goals Allow To Measure Progress
By setting goals for ourselves we are able to measure our progress because we always have
a fixed endpoint or benchmark to compare with.
3. Goals Keeps us Undistracted
By setting goals we give ourselves mental boundaries. When we have a certain end point in mind
we automatically stay away from certain distractions and stay focused towards the goal.
4. Goals Help You Overcome Procrastination
When we set a goal for ourselves we make ourselves accountable to finish the task. This is
in complete contrast with when we do things based off a whim and it doesn’t matter whether we
5. Goals Give Motivation
The root of all the motivation or inspiration ever felt in entire life is goals. Goal setting provides
foundation for the drive. Making a goal gives oneself a concrete endpoint to aim for and get
excited about.
4 Types of Goals Based on Time
There are four different types of goals: stepping stone goals, short term goals, long term goals
and lifetime goals.
Lifetime Goals
Lifetime goals are the goals that will take anywhere from 10 years to lifetime to achieve. Life
goals at 20 may not be the same at 40. It may be natural for them to change over time.
Long-Term Goals
These are workhorse goals. They need to have the specific time limits put on them: typically 5 or
10 year goals. Most people overestimate what they can do with short term goals, but
underestimate what is possible with long term goals. These goals encompass the really long term
versions of goals.
Short Term Goals
Short term goals are not always that short. They may be a month, six months or a year. These are
goals built of the bricks of stepping stone goals with the express purpose of reaching long term
or lifetime goals.
Stepping Stone Goals
These are transactional goals or action steps that allow to reach bigger goals. They are the bricks
that build the short term goals which in turn build the long-term and lifetime goals.
5 key principles for successful goal achievement
1. Commitment
Commitment refers to the degree to which an individual is attached to the goal and their
determination to reach it – even when faced with obstacles. Given the commitment to a goal, if
an individual’s performance is below what is required, it is likely to increase the individual’s
effort or change strategy in order to attain it.
2. Clarity
Specific goals put an individual on a direct course. When a goal is vague, it has limited
motivational value. Set clear, precise and unambiguous goals that are implicit and can be
measured
3. Challenging
Goals must be challenging yet attainable. Challenging goals can improve performance through
increased self-satisfaction, and the motivation to find suitable strategies to push our skills to the
limit. Conversely, goals that are not within our ability level will not be achieved, leading to
feelings of dissatisfaction and frustration.
5. Feedback
Goal setting is more effective in the presence of immediate feedback. Feedback – including
internal feedback – helps to determine the degree to which a goal is being met and how one is
progressing.
When we perceive our progress towards a goal as adequate, we feel capable of learning new
skills and setting more challenging future goals.
