Science 5 Module 2

Here are the chemical properties of the materials: 1. candle - it burns when lit with a match or lighter. 2. alcohol - it evaporates quickly at room temperature. It also burns when lit. 3. baking soda - it reacts with vinegar to produce carbon dioxide gas. Let me know if you need any clarification or have additional questions!

Explore

In module 1 you have learned that matter can be

classified according to its phases and composition.
Matter can also be distinguished depending upon
what type of substance it is composed of. Now, for
the second module we will dig up and discover more
of the amazing world of matter by studying its
properties. Are you ready? Let’s start!

Get a piece of paper and ball pen. Hop from one place to another in your home and
list down the materials found in each area. You may write the materials in the
table below.

Areas at Home Materials

Kitchen
Dining room
Bedroom
Comfort room
Garage and Garden

1. Why are these materials that you have listed found only in a certain
area at home?
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

2. Why should we not mixed or put these materials in one place only?

_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

3. Which material/s can be stretched?

_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

4. Why do you think this/these material/s can be stretched?

_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

Look for a material made of paper from the list that you have made and do the
following:

1. Observe its texture, color, size and shape.

2. Find a safer place in your house where you can burn the paper. Let your
older brother or sister or your parent assist or supervise you.

3. Observe what happens to the paper while burning and after burning it.

CAUTION: DON’T PLAY WITH FIRE. ASK YOUR PARENTS FOR

ASSISTANCE.

4. Answer the following questions:

i. What happens to the piece of paper when it was burned?

_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________

ii. Is it still the same as it was before? Why?

5. Write your observations on the table below.

Before Burning After Burning

Firm–up

In the activity given previously, you can see the

difference on the paper’s composition before and
after it was burned. This could be explain
through the different properties of matter.

Physical Change is a change in physical properties of a substance such

as shape, color, texture and mass. Some of the processes that cause
physical changes include cutting, bending, dissolving, freezing, boiling
and melting.

Chemical Change happens when one chemical substance is transformed

into one or more substances. Some of the examples are

burning of wood, and digestion of food.

Activity 2.2 : Properties of Materials
What You Need:

Paper clip , Rubber Band , Bottle Cap, Hammer , Sponge and Glass Vase

What to do:

1. Perform the tasks stated in each item below.

Materials Activities
Paper clip Straighten it. Now form it into a
heart shape.
Rubber band Stretch it for few seconds then
release it.
Sponge Get a small basin with half-filled
water. Put the sponge on it. Wait
for some seconds then take out
the sponge from the basin.
Record your observation.
Glass vase Assuming that you accidentally
Caution: Please DO NOT drop a glass vase on the floor.
What do you think will happen to
drop your glass vase
the glass vase?
Bottle cap(tin) Get a hammer or rock and flatten
it. Pound it and observe what
happens

2. Record your observations on the table below.

Materials Observations (Yes/No) Properties

Paper Clip Have you
straightened it?
Did it break?
Rubber band Did it return to
its original
shape?

SLMCS BED Science 5 Learning Module

Sponge Did it absorb
water?
Glass vase Did it break?
Bottle cap (tin) Were you able
to flatten it?
Did it break?
Rock Is there a
change in the
rock’s shape
when you pound
it?

It’s break time! Have you performed all of the

activities? If yes, you’re doing an excellent job. For
now take a break and breathe for a while before you
proceed to the next part of the module.

Deepen

Hi there little one! Now for the next part of this module let
us dig deeper and understand more of the properties of
matter.

23
List four physical properties of the given matter. What properties are
common to all? What properties are different?

Water Iron nail

Stone Milk

Below is a list of materials found at home. Give the chemical properties

exhibited by the material.

1. candle

2. alcohol

3. muriatic acid

4. copper wire

5. vinegar

properties of matter?

Transfer

1. Collect wrappers, boxes, sachets, or pictures of different household materials.

Examine what you have collected.

2. Group them and make a picture collage of useful and harmful materials.

3. Below it, write the usefulness and harmfulness these products may give us.
Submit your finished output to your teacher.
