Note: My teacher has asked me to only focus on the adding and subtracting as they have
learned this already but they still struggle so we are going to keep practicing with games and
such to help students become more confident in their adding and subtracting.
I also put the grade 2 outcomes but from what my teacher has told me many of these students
are at a grade one level and only a few are at grade two level, so this to help built up all
students in the class to be confident with themselves

Unit Assessment Plan

Subject: Math Topic: Numeracy (adding and
subtracting)
Grade: 1/2 Length: 24 classes
Stage 1 – Desired Results
Established Goals (GOs):
Students will be able to:
Number: Quantity is measured with numbers that enable counting, labeling, comparing, and
operating.
Grade 1:
● Students examine addition and subtraction within 20.
Grade 2:
● Students investigate addition and subtraction within 100.
Inquiry Question:
How does exploring addition and subtraction contribute to the development of foundational
mathematical skills in grade 1 and 2 students, and what insights can we gain into their
problem-solving strategies and collaborative learning experiences?"
Kid Friendly Terms:
How does learning to add and subtract help us solve real-life problems? What strategies do
we use to make math more interesting, and how can we explore different ways of solving
addition and subtraction challenges?
Rational:
Understanding addition and subtracting is vital, as it is a fundamental skill that will be built
on throughout their school career. There is also a focus on its real-world applications in daily
life from counting items to even practical problems. Beyond just memorization, learning
adding and subtracting can help our students foster critical thinking skills. As students are
trying to comprehend concepts, identify patterns, and apply problem solving skills. This
helps students in their overall development with preparing students more for future courses.
Cultivating mathematical fluency is a very key objective, helping gain accuracy, efficiency,
and flexibility in applying and understanding math operations. Throughout this unit of
consistent practice and understanding, students can really gain a navigation and
understanding of math concepts. Succession in mastering addition and subtraction
contributes to fostering a positive attitude to math. With success students are more likely to
enjoy math and feel confident going into the next year.
Special Considerations:
In this unit special considerations are essential for supporting and creating a safe
environment for students. Things like concrete manipulatives, like counting blocks and
visual aids can truly help students understand. Also recognizing that everyone learns at a
different pace, so activities can be made to accommodate the varying learning levels, so
students can progress at their own pace. Using the different methods such as play based
learning or visual aids can be great ways in this unit to get students engaged in their
learning. Recognizing the diverse learning abilities in the classroom, including ISP, is
important. Providing additional support or accommodations to ensure success for students is
very important within this unit. I also hope to create a classroom that finds value in
questions and curiosity to help create a positive environment for students. Thinking about
these special considerations can help students find confidence in themselves.

exercises. Take note of their engagement, collaboration, and understanding of
addition and subtraction concepts in real-life scenarios.
● Peer Teaching and Sharing: Incorporate peer teaching opportunities. Have students
work in pairs or small groups to explain their problem-solving approaches to each
other. Encourage constructive feedback and discussion.
● Fist of Five:This method I am hoping to use as a quick way to check in on students
in a lesson to see the understanding. I will mostly have students close their eyes
when doing this so as to not feel pressure from their peers if they are struggling.

Transition Ideas/Brain Breaks:

Breathing Exercises:
● Teach the children simple breathing exercises. For example, take a deep
breath in, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly. Repeat a few times.
● You can make it fun by incorporating visuals like a breathing buddy (a soft
toy placed on their bellies) that rises and falls as they breathe.
Stretching or Yoga Break:
● Introduce a few basic stretching or yoga poses. Keep it simple and make it
a fun routine. For example, reach for the sky, touch your toes, or pretend to
be different animals through yoga poses.
Transition Music:
● Use calming music or a short, upbeat tune to signal the transition. Have
the children stand up and do a quick dance or gentle movements until the
music stops.
Mindful Moments:
● Encourage mindfulness by having a "mindful moment" where students
close their eyes, take a few deep breaths, and focus on the present
moment. You can guide them through a short visualization or ask them to
listen to calming sounds.
Counting or Clapping Game:
● Have the students stand and do a simple counting or clapping game. For
example, they can count to 20 together or clap their hands in different
patterns.
Nature Observation:
● If possible, take a moment to observe nature outside, like looking at the
sky, clouds, or trees. Ask students to take a few deep breaths and
appreciate the natural surroundings.

Silent Transition Challenge:

● Challenge the students to transition quietly and efficiently. You can make it a
game by timing them and rewarding them with a small positive reinforcement if
they do it well.
