Promethee Report

The document describes a project to design a graphical user interface (GUI) mobile app for firefighters to manage resources during fire events. It outlines 4 parts of the project: 1) Requirements gathering through interviews with fire captains, 2) Design and development of prototypes, 3) Experimental testing of prototypes with users, 4) Analysis of experimental results. Key requirements identified include adding/removing/editing map items, an overview of resources, searchability, and updating locations and information in real-time. The project aims to improve the efficiency and usability of resource coordination during emergency response.

TOULOUSE, 2020.
For the group project, we designed a GUI for the fire department of Toulouse city. The first task
is to collect requirements from the users who are the fire captains of the department. Their
main job is to manage the resources in case of an event of fire – Resources like human: fire
fighters, the materials: fire trucks, firefighting aircrafts, fuel logistic resources, etc. However, the
fire captain need not be present at the site to perform this task because he/she can control the
event using an app on his tablet. We have a current version of the app displaying the map of
the intervention displayed on the background, and the graphical elements represent the
resources and the fire (Figure 1) –

Figure 1: Current UI of the app used by the firefighter department of Toulouse.

1) The captain(user) can allot the resources (in dozens) using the GUI elements of the app for
example, the drop down menu to ADD the resources. After he/she selects the choice, the
element is inserted in the middle of the map.
2) Then he can move the element around on the map using the finger touch.

For the improvement of efficiency of the interaction, fire captains around France have been
interviewed. The features they would want to include are:

1) An easier way to insert the graphical elements on the map.

2) A more accurate way to move one or more elements on the map simultaneously.
3) The ability to view more information about a resource located on the map.
4) The ability to search a specific resource.
5) The ability to have an overview of the resource positioned off map. i.e. to check the
resource availability.

In this project, we consider the following graphical elements:

We consider Mr. Elio Keddisseh – our Lecturer for the course, as the fire captain and as such we
interviewed him for the requirements gathering phase of the project.

The project is divided into four parts:

Part I: Project Design

(Collect Requirements from user i.e. the Fire Captain)

The potential challenges/queries faced to design the UI were:

 To consider the device size

 The input method whether it be a finger or a stylus
 In which context/environment the app is going to be used?
 How is the fire fighter interacting with the app – is he getting notifications about the
directions from the captain or he manages the activity himself on the app?
 How the live updates of the elements be handled?
 How to navigate the map?
 How others will use the app?
 Who adds the fire?
 Are the trucks GPS backed?
 How to draw things: focus mode? edit mode?
 How many elements to keep on the UI at a given time?
 The functionality to quickly search for an available resource at a time.
All the challenges and queries raised while designing the interface must be tackled by
interviewing the user and collect his requirements and needs for the app. Thus, based on the
interview with the captain, the requirements of the user are:

1) Device: tablet (big size).

2) Input method: finger.
3) Used in: office and/or while walking.
4) Add items to map.
5) Remove items from map.
6) Edit items in the map.
7) See overview of the resources.
8) Clean & Neat view- No clutter.
9) Labels on Legends.
10) Items locations may be updated by GPS, etc.
11) Information about fire such as start time, time elapsed, direction it goes to and address.
12) Search elements.
13) New information may be needed to be added quickly.
14) Group things together if many.
15) Quick access.
16) The app is only used by the fire captain.
17) For the trucks, check fuel level, availability and location.
18) Some information may be added fast like group of drivers.
19) Legend features: too ambiguous, hides information, live updates, zoom/hide item, menu
to toggle information.
