The History of Computing

Computer is an equipment which is programed to compute and perform calculations

automatically. The history of computer hardware covers its development; from simple devices to
aid calculation, to mechanical calculators, punched card data processing, into modern stored
program computers. The tools or mechanical tools that was used to help in calculation are called
calculators, while the machine operator that helps in calculations is a computer. The history of
computing started at the early date, which is in 3000 BC when the Chinese Abacus was
introduced. This Chinese Abacus is considered as the first machine the humans created to be
used for counting and calculating. Which eventually evolved into the first mechanical adding
machine called the “Pascaline” that was built by the mathematician and scientist, Blaise Pascal in
1642. From dates 1660s to 1700s, Gottfried Leibniz created his own calculating machine that is
able to perform all four arithmetic operations and the concepts of binary , which is inspired by
creator of Pascaline. The first ever computer was invented in the 1820s by Charles Babbage, and
is known as the father of computer. His great invention was to use punch cards for storage, steam
power, and operated by one person that would be able to compute tables of numbers. The project
that was funded by the British government called the "Difference Engine" failed, that is caused
by the lack of technology at that time. Next to him was Ada Lovelace, the world’s first
programmer that came up with an Algorithm that could calculate Bernoulli numbers. In 1890,
Herman Hollerith designed one of the first successful electromechanical machines, which is
referred to as the census tabulator. Hollerith’s tabulator became very successful and he went on
to found his own firm to market the device, called the IBM. In 1936, Alan Turing proposed the
concept of a universal machine, and was later on described in 1936-1937. Turing machine,
capable of computing anything that is computable, it is a simple abstract computational device
that is intended to help investigate the extent and limitations of what can be computed. Turing's
'automatic machines', as he termed them in 1936, were specifically devised for the computing of
real numbers. Also starting in 1936, Konrad Zuse invented the world’s programmable computer.
His invention read instructions from punched tape and was the first computer to use Boolean
logic and binary codes to make decisions through the use of relays.
The beginning of the modern computer was marked by the Vacuum Tube Era. The first
technology that was fully digital, and unlike the relays used in previous computers, it became
less power hungry, faster and more reliable. Beginning in 1937-1942, the first digital computer
was built by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry, the computer was dubbed as the ABC. The ABC

was purely digital, and it used vacuum tubes and included binary math and Boolean logic to
solve up to 29 equations at a time. In 1943 Colossus, the world's first electronic computer, had a
single

purpose: to help decipher the Lorenz-encrypted (Tunny) messages between Hitler and his
generals during World War II. The ENIAC or otherwise known as the Electrical Numerical
Integrator and Computer was completed in 1946. The ENIAC is considered the first successful
high-speed electronic digital computer and essentially took the concepts from Atanasoff’s ABC
and elaborated on them in a much larger scale. The Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic
Computer aka the EDVAC which was completed in 1950 and the first stored program computer,
was one of the earliest electronic computers. Which was built by Moore School of Electrical
Engineering, Pennsylvania. Along with ORDVAC, it was a successor to the ENIAC.
In 1947 the Transistor Era begun, Bell Labs invented the first silicon transistor that
replaced the vacuum tubes. And by 1954 the first transistorized digital computer was invented
which is also known as the TRADIC. In this era we begin to see the major introductions to both
the hardware and software aspect of computing. The first memory device was the random access
magnetic core store introduced in 1951 by Jay Forrester is called ram today. And the very first
hard drive was introduced by IBM in 1957. A lot of major innovations and breakthroughs began
to come across because this computer hardware and architecture was beginning to become more
standardized, instead of people working on different variations of a computing machine.
Assembly was the first programming language introduced in 1949, however it really started
taking off in this era of computing. The first true widely used programming language was
Fortran that invented by John Backus at IBM in 1954. Assembly is considered a low level
language and Fortran is a high level language.
The Integrated Circuit Era marks the beginning of the modern computing era. Where the
exponential trend of computing performance really began. While transistors were a major
improvement over vacuum tubes, they still had to be individually soldered together. As a result,
the more complex computer led to more complicated and numerous connections between
transistors, increasing the likelihood of faulty wiring. And this all changed with Jack Kilby of
Texas who realized the first integrated circuit in 1958. Douglas Engelbart invented a mouse in
1964 he also demonstrated the first graphical user interface. Computer speed and performance,
memory and storage also began to iteratively increase as ICs could pack more transistors into
smaller surface areas. This was demonstrated by the invention of floppy disk in 1971 by IBM,
and in the same year DRAM by Intel to list a few. Computing since the 1900s has greatly

evolved at an increasingly fast rate. Hence , in 1965 Moore's Law refers to Gordon Moore's
perception that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years, though the cost
of computers is halved. And from the beginning of computing, computers has become a great
part in our daily lives, and is deemed as a revolutionary equipment. Also, computers have
evolved in order to suit up the daily work and needs of a person, either at work, school or at
home for it is now needed in our daily lives to make it easy and more convenient for us people
who are busy.
