Duke's Confidentiality on Misconduct

Duke University is unable to comment on an ongoing investigation into allegations that professor Dan Ariely falsified data. Gregory Phillips, a spokesperson for Duke, provides a statement that the university is required by policy to maintain confidentiality of research misconduct investigations, including confirming or denying their existence. Ariely told a reporter that Duke's investigation found no evidence he was directly responsible for falsifying data or knowingly published falsified data, but that he could have done more to prevent it from being published.

Hi Kate,

Here’s a statement you can attribute to Frank Tramble, vice president for communications,
marketing and public affairs at Duke:

“Duke University is required by policy to maintain the confidentiality of research misconduct

investigations, including the existence of such investigations.”

Sorry we can’t be more help.

Cheers,

Gregory

Hi,

I'm a reporter at Business Insider, working on an article about Dan Ariely. I wanted to see if you would be able to provide
any comment on Duke's investigation into allegations that Ariely falsified data. Ariely told me:

“Duke’s investigation found no evidence to show I was responsible for data falsification or knowingly used falsified data in
relation to the 2012 PNAS paper. Duke’s findings are that the data were indeed falsified, and that I should have more
thoroughly vetted the data and more diligently stored records about the data. In short, the investigation found there was
more I could have done to prevent falsified data from being published."

I wanted to see if you could confirm this is accurate, and provide any additional context. My deadline is this Friday. Happy
to speak on the phone, if that would be more convenient — my number is (646) 768-4740.

Best,

Kate
