Swing Dance History
A black community discovered swing dance during the 1920s through
dancing to contemporary jazz music. Swing dance is a dance that was inspired
by a revolution of jazz music that kept audiences dancing, and thus, music was
known and described as 'Swing Jazz' to befit the music's effect on its audiences.
The dancing soon evolved to fit the theme and vice-versa, causing the name
'swing dance' in the mid-1920s. The Dance came in many styles, including the
Balboa, Lindy Hop, Lindy Charleston, and Collegiate Shag. The Lindy Hop
remains the most famous of the swing dances today. Most of the dances
originated from African American communities, but some, like the Balboa, came
from other cities.
Lindy Hop, also known as the jitterbug, was developed in the 1920s and is
the original swing dance. However, the term 'jitterbug' is commonly used to
describe any swing dancer. It is derived from the dancers' visual display on the
floor, looking like jitterbugs with fast, bouncy movements. Lindy Hop, an 8-count
dance characterized by a lot of physical vigor and a tap on the dance shoes,
continued to evolve in the 1930s. The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem became its
home more professional dance troupes formed around it. The companies which
featured one much famous dancer, Frankie Manning, toured Europe and the
USA as well as being showcased in films like "Hellzapoppin" (1941) and "A Day
at the Races"(1937), among others. The Savoy attracted some of the best
dancers in New York with its Swinging Jazz music and black bands. Benny
Physical Activities Toward Health and Fitness 2
Goodman and other community members danced to contemporary jazz and
swing music. They soon began to incorporate tap steps into their dancing, which
produced a tapping sound on their dance shoes.
The swing dance swept through the media waves between the 1930s and
1940s, with the terms Jitterbug, Lindy Hop, and Lindy being interchanged in the
news in the description of the dancing on the streets, clubs, and dance contest
venues. Dance shoes also became popular things during this time. With the
evolution of music between the 1920s and the 1990s, swing dance evolved
across the U.S. to suit the many musical genres like Jazz, Bop, Rhythm & Blues,
Rock 'n' Roll, Country, and Disco. Rhythm & Blues, for instance, came with
dances like the Dallas whip and the Imperia Swing.
Ballroom dance studio teachers started to distill and wash down the Lindy
Hop, Lindy, Jitterbug, and Swing to reduce the complexities of dance lessons
offered to the public, which resulted in the ballroom dance studios creating two
swing dance styles; a ballroom East Coast Swing and a ballroom West Coast
Swing.

Dance Theories
1. Philosophers dance theory.
Some philosophers were concerning arts that are usually called
aesthetics, meaning a sense of a beautiful, artistic, and pure emotion. In our
case, they produce written descriptions of Dance, reviews, and philosophical
deliberations about our art's components and values.
Sometimes they elaborate interpretations of particular dance pieces,
considering the symbolic dimension of its elements. This practice is called
Physical Activities Toward Health and Fitness 2
semiotics or hermeneutics. Semiotic is a study of signs and symbols with their
purpose in the interpretation of the Dance.
2. Social sciences dance theory.
Another branch in dance theory is the one produced by anthropologists
and sociologists. Closer related to philosophers, they explore dance ethnic
features, considering aspects of Dance as a medium of cultural and social
interaction. Characteristics of different dance genres and styles are performed
according to their social settings and cultures.
3. Medical field researches in dance therapy.
Dance makes people active. They enjoyed dancing while music is playing.
Rhythms are just outrageously come up. It uses part of the other dance theory
branches' theoretical tools and knowledge to work on its own goals. But, as its
final intention is to 'cure' people utilizing Dance, it is considered differently as a
dance theory discipline.
Historical Background of Line Dance
Many famous lines dance set to country music. The first line dances did
not originate from country-western dancing. Line dancing is a dance which
believed to have originated from folk dancing, which has many similarities.
During the 1980s and 1990s, line dances started that usually uses popular
country songs. One example is a dance made for Billy Ray Cyrus' 1992 smash
Physical Activities Toward Health and Fitness 2
hit "Achy Breaky Heart." Even pop music began to see an upswing in line dances
in the 1990s, with "the Macarena" serving as a sort of hybrid folk-pop dance
number that swept the world by storm.
Line Dance Format
Basic line dances focus on the legs and feet' movements, with more
advanced dances, including the arms and hands. A line dance movements are
marked as "counts," where one count generally equals one musical beat. A
particular activity or Step takes place at each beat.
A line dance will have a certain number of counts, meaning the number of
beats in one complete Dance sequence. For example, a 64-count dance would
contain 64 seconds. The number of moments does not necessarily equal the
number of steps; however, steps can be performed between two beats or more
than one beat.
Line dance is basically made up of a certain number of steps, with each
Step identified by a catchy name. The Texas Two-Step, the Tush Push, the West
Coast Shuffle, the Redneck Girl, and the Boot Scootin' Boogie are all well-known
line dances still performed in country-western bars today.
Line Dancing Today
Because its steps are simple and don't involve dancing with a partner.
Line dancing is ideal for singles and people who don't usually dance. Line
dancing is taught and practiced in country-western dance bars, social clubs, and
dance halls worldwide.
One of the most popular line dances performed today is the "Cha-Cha
Slide," whose easy-to-follow steps are dictated right in the lyrics to the song,
though you may be unfamiliar with certain moves like the Charlie Brown. The
