Objective:
To establish a File-Sharing Server System by connecting two PCs on different networks for the
purpose of sharing a folder containing soft copy files, allowing access from both PCs.
Equipment and Software Required:
1. Two Personal Computers\Laptops.
2. Ethernet Cable (with RJ45 clamps connected)
3. Network Interface Cards (NICs) in both PCs
4. Operating System: Windows 10 (or any OS supporting network sharing)
5. File Sharing Software: Windows File Sharing (SMB protocol)
Network Configuration:
Procedure:
Step 1: Physical Setup
Connect PC1 and PC2 via a crossover Ethernet Cable.
Step 2: Configuring Network Settings
Set unique static IP Addresses on both PC1 and PC2 (both IP Addresses should belong to
different networks). Assign IP Address of one system as Default Gateway of other and vice
versa.

Step 3: Setting Up File Sharing in both systems
Allow file sharing Public, Private and All networks from Advanced Sharing Settings on both
systems. Turn off Password Protected Sharing for All networks.

Step 4: Sharing files/folders in both systems
• Choose the folder you want to share.
• Right-click on the folder, select “give access to” then select “specific people”.
• Select the network you want to share the folder to which network (In our case give access to everyone
so any network connected to Habib’s laptop will get the shared folder).
• Set permissions as needed (read/write access).

Step 5: Accessing Shared files/folders in both systems
Page 4 of 5
Step 6: Testing File Access and Transfer
Create, modify, and delete files in the shared folder from both PCs to ensure proper access and
permissions.
Troubleshooting:
• Check IP configurations and subnet masks if unable to connect.
• Verify that both PCs are in the same workgroup.
• Ensure that network discovery and file sharing are enabled on both PCs.
Conclusion:
The File-Sharing Server System was successfully implemented, allowing seamless file sharing
between PC1 and PC2. This network provides an efficient way to share and manage files within
a small environment, demonstrating the capabilities of basic network configuration and file
sharing protocols.
