BalClorBWMSTrainingPART1 HTML

The document describes the key components and working principles of the BalClor ballast water management system (BWMS). The system uses a combination of filtration, disinfection, and neutralization to treat ballast water. Filtration removes organisms over 50 microns. Disinfection uses electrolysis to generate sodium hypochlorite which is injected into the ballast water. Neutralization adds sodium thiosulfate during deballasting to neutralize any residual oxidants. The system components include automatic back-flushing filters, an electrolysis disinfection unit, an automatic neutralization unit, and a control system to monitor and automate the process.

BalClor ® BWMS

TRAINING
The inadvertent transfer of harmful aquatic
organisms and pathogens in the ballast water of
ships has been determined to have caused a
significant adverse impact to many of the world’s
coastal regions. The international maritime
community, under the auspices of the International
Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed several
documents, including the “International Conventions
for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast
Water and Sediments, 2004”, (Ballast Water
Management Convention), which are aimed at
preventing the introduction of unwanted aquatic
organisms and pathogens through the discharge of
ballast water and sediments.
Ballast Water Management System means any system which process ballast water such at it meets
or exceeds the ballast water discharge performance standard.

EDU Description

The EDU gets a little seawater to electrolyzer and

generates oxidant (NaClO) and by-product hydrogen.
The electrolyzed water contains sodium hypochlorite
solution is injected back into the main ballast pipe.
The hydrogen is separated by cyclone, and then the
hydrogen is diluted with air by using a blower to a safe
level before it is released to overboard.

ANU Description

Automatic neutralization unit is used to neutralizing

residual oxident in the treated ballast water during de-
ballasting process.
The amount of neutralizer is controlled and adjusted
according to the amount of flow of the ballast water in the
main pipe and the TRO concentration in the ballast water
measured by the TRO analyzer.
Na2 S2 O3 solution is used as the neutralizer.

Control Description

BalClor ® BWMS is designed for completed automatic

operation on the basis of PLC platform. During automatic
operation, the working condition of every part in this system
is automatic monitored.
In emergency cases, the system can be manually
operated. When emergency occurs, PLC will send
instruction signal to adjust the working condition of the
identified part.
Meanwhile, PLC will transmit the working parameters of
the equipment and the alarm status to the HMI for
operating and observing.

22 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Rectifier

The rectifier is a type of high-

Control Unit frequency switch rectifying power
supply to convert AC into DC and
provide DC power for the
Modules electrolyzers.

The rectifier is mainly composed of

power modules, monitors and
frames. Each power module works
separately at average current in
parallel operation.

The rectifier also provides 220V and

440V power to other equipment.

System Control Cabinet
• The system control cabinet is the control center of
the BalClor BWMS with steady performance and
facilitating operation. The control cabinet is
composed of the cabinet, PLC, touch screen,
intermediate relays, terminals and contactors etc.

• The control cabinet supplies 220AC and 24DC

power for meters and electric valves. The PLC in
the cabinet controls the rectifiers, electrolyzers
and electric valves to realize the electrolysis and
neutralization process. And all the operation can
be conducted on the touch screen. The control
cabinet communication with onboard control
system via RS485 or no source contacts signal.

25 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Motor Control Cabinet

• The motor control cabinet is composed

of the cabinet, intermediate relays,
terminals, motor breakers and
contactors, etc.

• The motor control cabinet controls and

supplies AC power for the motors, such
as sludge pump, seawater booster
pump and dosing pump, etc.

26 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Remote Control Cabinet

• The remote control panel is used to realize

the remote control function of BWMS. The
remote control panel is composed of the
cabinet, touch screen, etc. The operation
personal can through the remote operation
panel control BWMS.

27 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Remote Control Cabinet

• The junction box includes AFU control

box, EDU junction box and ANU
junction box. These junction boxes act
as a bridging role between the system
control cabinet and the junction boxes.

28 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Flow Measuring system

Flow measuring system uses an electromagnetic flow meter measure the flow volume of
ballast water. The electromagnetic system consists of one transmitter and one sensor. And
include two types: split and combined.

Flowmeter of combined type Flowmeter of split type

29 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
TRO Monitoring System

During ballasting, TRO monitoring system measures TRO concentration of ballast

water after fully mixed with sodium hypochlorite solution and transmits concentration signal
to PLC in the system control cabinet. After compared with preset signal, PLC transfer result
signal to the rectifier. On the basis of received signal, rectifier will regulate output current to
control amount of sodium hypochlorite generated by electrolytic cell to maintain TRO
concentration.

During de-ballasting, the control system will calculate neutralizer dosage

automatically in accordance with overboard TRO value and main pipe flow rate.
