Waterproofing System for Wet Areas using AWAZEL DS 40
METHOD OF STATEMENT
1. Surface Preparation
Concrete areas scheduled to receive the waterproofing system shall be inspected to ensure that
slopes and all details, such as drains, penetrations...etc. are made according to the standards
required, prior to the application of the membrane system. Provisions shall be made to ensure
that work of preceding trades shall be completed satisfactorily.
Surfaces shall be clean and free from water, oil, grease, debris, curing compounds and other
harmful chemicals. Surface shall be brushed thoroughly to ensure that it is free from dust and
sticking substances.
2. Installation
2. A. Up stands & Tapered strip.
The surface on the job site shall to be prepared and follow all irregularities and forming a
minimum positive drainage slope to falls of 1 % if it is possible, Surfaces shall be finished to
provide good surface ready to receive the waterproofing Membrane system.
According to the membrane application method, a layer of leveling screed (2cm) shall be
required; all up-stands shall be provided with (50x50 mm) sand/cement tapered strip.
2. B. Primer
Surfaces to receive primer shall be clean and free from debris. Surfaces shall be coated
uniformly with one coat of AWAZEL PRIMER D41 at the rate advised by the manufacturer (if
required), and left to dry totally before applying the membrane layers.
2. C. Waterproofing Membrane
Wet Ares waterproofing Membrane AWAZEL DS 40 base layer shall be installed according to
manufacturer's recommendations, work shall start at the lowest point of the surface and
membrane shall be laid perpendicular to surface slope, membrane shall be applied so that the
flow of water is over and not against the laps.
Top Layer AWAZEL DS 40 shall be applied fully-bonded onto the base layer, at the same
direction of rolls length, with shifting the side laps 0.50 meter in order to secure the membrane
waterproofing system with maximum overlaps.
- Side laps shall be 8 - 12 cm; end laps shall be 12 - 15 cm.
- Using a torch flame the operation is carried out by gently pressing the edges so that
some of the melted bitumen mass flows out.
- Application of membrane will be in accordance with approved shop drawings.
- Details such as expansion joints, penetrations, corners...etc., shall comply with
manufacturer standard construction details, non-standard details shall be approved by the
membrane manufacturer.
2. D. Tapered Strip
Tapered, curbs and all covered up-stands must be primed USING AWAZEL D41 before applying
the modified bitumen membrane vertically. The vertically applied membrane AWAZEL DS 40
must always be fully bonded. It shall cover tapered strip and extend onto the cultivated area's
walls to a height as specified.
The membrane shall be terminated as per manufacturer recommendations using groove
and AWAZEL PU FLEX.
3. Protection Layer
A Protection layer, thickness as specified, shall be laid onto the waterproofing membrane. It will
be cementing mortar screed as specified forming a minimum positive drainage slope to falls of 1
%.
4. Wet Areas Cover (Finish):-
Wet Areas tiles or marble shall be applied onto the cement sand layer as specified.
5. Test
Prior to laying subsequent system layers, waterproofing shall be tested for water tightness.
Drains shall be temporarily plugged and Roofs shall be flooded with a minimum of 5 cm of
water at the highest points, but never above the vertical waterproofed areas. Water shall be
permitted to stand for 24-48 hours. Leaks shall be located (if any) and the point of the roof
developing leakage shall be repaired and retested.
6. Quality Control
Waterproofing contractor shall always ensure the compliance of roofing with contract requirements.
The contractor representative shall be a qualified engineer and having experience in this field,
and shall be responsible for the execution of work specified in this section.
Any work that does not comply with contract specifications, shall be removed and corrected at
once.
