3.1 The daily routines of a sportswoman

II. READING

A. Read the text.

Janet is 31 years old. She’s French but lives in New York. She has lots of gold and silver medals in cycling. She
can’t cycle now because she has an arm problem, but she can run.
Janet wakes up at 4:30 am every morning. She reads for 30 minutes in bed. At 5:00 am she checks her emails
and then goes running. She runs for an hour. After running, she has a shower and then she prepares breakfast.
She usually eats cereal and fruit.
She usually finishes breakfast at around 8 am. She always leaves the house at 8:20 and goes to the gym. Her
training starts at 9 am. She trains for 3 hours with her team and then goes home for lunch. She always eats a
very big lunch. She sleeps for one hour after lunch.
She typically goes to bed at 9 pm. She sometimes listens to music, but never watches TV.

III. Grammar — Adverbs of frequency (Frequency adverbs)


A. How Often?

We use adverbs of frequency with the Simple Present to describe how regularly or how often something
happens.

We put adverbs of frequency after the verb to be:


to be + adverbs of frequency
My son is always in bed at 10 o’clock.
I’m occasionally free on Saturdays.

We put adverbs of frequency before main verbs.

We use do + noun for activities we can do alone (not in a team ).

We use go with activity verbs that end in -ing.

Talk about your free time activities with your friends using the collocations and frequency adverbs above.

V. GRAMMAR —Can/ Can’t

A. ‘Can’ is a modal verb. We use modal verbs before other verbs.

The negative of can is cannot, but we usually use the short form can’t.
Modal verbs do not change their form after he, she or it.
e.g. He can play the guitar. We can play the piano.

We can use can and can’t to talk about ability. We use can to talk about things we are able to do, and can’t to
talk about things that we are not able to do.
e.g.I can swim but I can’t dive.
Note: when we talk about the skill or the ability, we don’t say go running or go swimming; we use run, swim,
etc.
e.g. I can swim. I go swimming on Sundays.
We use can+ you + infinitive to make requests- when we want someone else to do something.
e.g. Can you answer the phone?
