document. Philosophy of kierkegaard is a great value for all people. This is a wonderful book for
readers interested in Kierkegaard. He is the chairman of the editorial board of Kierkegaard's Journals
and Notebooks (Princeton, forthcoming). He quickly abandoned his initial pursuit of theology in
order to specialize in philology at Bonn and Leipzig, where he studied with Friedrich Ritschl.
Kierkegaard saw himself as a vessel for his writings, a tool in the hand of God, and eventually as a
martyr singled out to call for the end of “Christendom.” Garff explores the events and relationships
that formed Kierkegaard, including his guilt-ridden relationship with his father, his rivalry with his
brother, and his famously tortured relationship with his fiancee Regine Olsen. The only thing I could
not put up with and could not do without losing myself and the dialectical in my relationship (which
is precisely what I could not put up with) is to defend myself qua author. When the infinite
requirement is heard and affirmed, is heard and affirmed in all its infinitude, then grace is offered, or
grace offers itself, to which the single individual, each one individually, can then have recourse as I
do; and then it works out all right. In such a world, death is not to be feared, since it represents
nothing more significant than the fitting conclusion of a life devoted to personal gain. And, if this
isn’t bad enough, beyond the borders of each gray-coated possibility looms a philosophical concept
that holds the gray possibility like a fishing net holds a flapping fish. I've tended not to read
Kierkegaard because I don't like his style. In a series of (mostly pseudonymous) books, Kierkegaard
rebelled against the prevailing Hegelianism of his time and developed many themes that would later
be associated with the philosophy of existentialism. In fact, the respective concepts of Nietzsche and
kierkegaard are reflective of the continuing struggle for significance between atheism and religion.
This is what I to the best of my ability and with maximum effort and much sacrifice have fought for,
fighting against every tyranny, also the tyranny of the numerical. Only rare, superior individuals—the
noble ones, or Ubermenschen —can rise above all moral distinctions to achieve a heroic life of truly
human worth. My strategy was: with the help of God to utilize everything to make clear what in
truth Christianity’s requirement is—even if not one single person would accept it, even if I myself
might have to give up being a Christian, which in that case I would have felt obliged to acknowledge
publicly. Christianity is just as gentle as it is rigorous, just as gentle, that is, infinitely gentle. In that
way the individual in his work will love his idea, the nation to which he belongs, the cause he serves,
the language he as an author has the honor to write. The decision to leap into religion, Christianity
for Kierkegaard, is taken for different reasons by the ethicist and the aesthete. Ziolkowski has done
a masterful job of organizing the essays as mutually illuminating contributions on a variety of themes,
such as receptivity and engagement, immanence and transcendence, and Bildung and disruption. But
even this appears in a work he published pseudonymously. Finally, this movement of the authorship
is again decisively marked by reflection or is the movement of reflection. Om Begrebet Ironi ( The
Concept of Irony ) (1841) was his dissertation at the University of Copenhagen. Then he returned to
Yale for his M.A. in 1962 and Ph.D. in 1964. After receiving his doctorate, he taught at Yale as
Instructor of Philosophy and then moved on to teach at Haverford College, where he remained until
1976, resigning to begin a career as a private detective. I believe it is important that we open avenues
of productive dialogue between experts and non-experts - both of whom I try to bring together here
- in order to elevate the greater discussion of ideas among the engaged populace. There can be no
proof of the authority behind the command, since any such demonstration of its value would make it
impossible for us to accept it as a matter of faith. What would be the way out of such a mental
quagmire. And I myself have from the start enjoined and again and again repeated stereotypically: I
am without authority. Additionally, Kierkegaard kept a daily diary where he penned his on-going
commentary. Report this Document Download now Save Save Kierkegaard For Later 0 ratings 0%

The fault from below was to want to do away with all government. The acceptance of “faith”
precisely because it was irrational or miraculous was to Kierkegaard the entry into the final stage.

Josiah Thompson, American philosopher and Kierkegaard scholar, provides a detailed overview of
Kierkegaard, the man and the thinker, from his childhood to his death at age forty-three, an odd,
most peculiar life, to be sure. Nor have I hesitated—as is consistent with silence and mysteriousness
and doubleness—in a finite sense to work against my effort. But even this appears in a work he
published pseudonymously. Like Comment Seth Pierce Author 14 books 33 followers May 27, 2015
A very well written biography that is a little sad. One of Kierkegaard's most notable works is his
theory of the spheres of existence. Any appeal to the opinions of others is inherently false, since it
involves an effort to avoid responsibility for the content and justification of my own convictions.
The decision was usually induced by a traumatic event and the ethicist and aesthete took the leap for
different reasons: the aesthete in search of a greater ideal and the ethicist in his belief in the greater
organic synthesis in life. Yet by the help of God the attempt will surely come to naught. My views on
some of his wirings were affected by this work, and I am curious to go back and read them with the
knowledge that Kierkegaard plays intricate thought experiments within the pages of his
pseudonymous works. Kierkegaard was not the obscure, lonely writer that he himself would have
one believe. Thus the single individual must personally relate himself to the unconditional. They all
are disembodied hermits lacking parents or home, wife or job, appetite or fear.” One more quote to
give a flavor of Thompson’s keen insights, “The ambience of all these works is that of duplicity, and
their essential theme is the inherent volatility of human consciousness. But since the movement is to
arrive at the simple, the communication in turn must sooner or later end in direct communication.
Three stages of the dialectical ladder: Aesthetic Ethical Religious Kierkegaard problematizes the
ethical by reconstructing the story of Abraham and Isaac from the Old Testament. For example,
picture yourself sharing a meal with your friend. But lest any confusion could occur, lest this satire
could be confused with what all too readily wants to pass itself off as satire—the profane revolt of
the most deeply sunken profane powers—then I, who have represented this godly satire, then I was
the very one who hurled myself against and exposed myself to that mob-revolt’s profane satire. ?? In
this way I have devoutly striven from the very beginning to be honest. Christianity is just as gentle
as it is rigorous, just as gentle, that is, infinitely gentle. Kierkegaard’s invitation, we must accept that
truth is subjectivity and make a decision, commit to something, the sooner the better. My strategy
was: with the help of God to utilize everything to make clear what in truth Christianity’s requirement
is—even if not one single person would accept it, even if I myself might have to give up being a
Christian, which in that case I would have felt obliged to acknowledge publicly. Yet perhaps this
very gentleness is in another sense an inconvenience to some people; it would be much easier to
dispose of the whole thing if the author were an addlepate who at every point exaggerated both the
indictment and the requirement. Yet Point of View is neither a confession nor a defense; it is an
author's story of a lifetime of writing, his understanding of the maze of greatly varied works that
make up his oeuvre. Happily, he seems to possess something of Kierkegaard's divine ability to
express deep insights into human nature with a subtle and aristocratic touch. The aesthetic stage is
marked by the individual’s only desire in life being to enjoy himself. Just as the daimon of Socrates,
when Socrates was accused and about to be sentenced by the crowd, he who felt himself to be a
divine gift.
Christianity is just as gentle as it is rigorous, just as gentle, that is, infinitely gentle. The collection is
rounded out with a comparative section that considers Kierkegaard in juxtaposition with a romantic
poet (William Blake), a modern composer (Arnold Schoenberg), and a contemporary
singer?songwriter (Bob Dylan). Here is what Thompson has to say, “Like their author they seem
inordinately “ghostly,” purely mental, never rooted in the physical world through their bodies,
without physical desire or suffering. Subscribe to receive a welcome discount for your next order.
Kierkegaard believed this individualistic existence caused everyone to travel along a path toward
self-realization and this process, he noted, had three stages. If the author had been a richly endowed
intellect, or, if he was that, if he had been a doubly richly endowed intellect, he probably would have
needed a longer or a doubly long period in order to describe this path in literary production and to
reach this point. Genuine innocence entails an inability to forsee all outcomes, which thereby renders
one incapable of gaining control over one’s own life. This is what I to the best of my ability and with
maximum effort and much sacrifice have fought for, fighting against every tyranny, also the tyranny
of the numerical. For him, the greatest value in life is in accepting oneself and one’s role in the
greater system of life. If there is some individual who has the capability of being an author and if he
is also fortunate enough to have private means, then he becomes an author more or less at his own
expense. Some books are hard to read, but in a satisfying way (e.g. Being and Time), but somehow
the vibe of the difficulty of Kierkegaard put me off. What I have done in this regard has been
misunderstood, interpreted as pride, arrogance, and God knows what. And to come to know this
thoroughly seems to me to be in the interest of every human being, whether one is now a Christian
or a non-Christian, whether one’s intention is to accept Christianity or to abandon it. Yet it certainly
is no exaggeration for infinity’s requirement, the infinite requirement, to be presented— infinitely (it
is indeed also in the very interest of grace ). Yes, if I were a strong ethical-religious character—alas,
instead of being hardly anything but a poet!—and therefore justified and duty-bound in proceeding
more rigorously on behalf of the truth, it would no doubt be possible that I would only encounter
opposition instead of finding access to my contemporaries. What would be the way out of such a
mental quagmire. And this is also (in reflection, as it in fact was originally) the Christian movement.
A seamless blend of history, philosophy, and psychological insight, all conveyed with novelistic
verve, this is the most comprehensive and penetrating account yet written of the life and works of
the enigmatic Dane who changed the course of intellectual history. This higher synthesis is achieved
through what Kierkegaard calls “absolute choice.” The absolute choice or decision that the individual
makes at a point of crisis in their life is akin to the common phrase “leap of faith. And not only do
you continually invent multiple possible realities, you are forever in a melancholy mood, so each of
these possibilities is coated with a film of gray. Indeed, this is how it will be where there is harmony
between the individual and the nation, which in turn in the given situation will be somewhat
appreciative of this individual. Report this Document Download now Save Save Kierkegaard For

Garff’s biography of Kierkegaard is thus a landmark achievement. Ever scornful of human

Although he directly addressed few of the social concerns that most interested his contemporary,
Karl Marx, Kierkegaard has received ample attention from more recent Marxists, including Marcuse
and Lukacs. It was, however, possible that the trivial, the comical, could still happen, that some well-

Kierkegaard's life and writings so exceptional... so concrete and rich with perspectives, that it has no
