CE4131 - Lecture 2

The document discusses interference of continuous foundations in granular soil. It presents 3 cases of center-to-center spacing of two foundations and analyzes how their ultimate bearing capacities are affected. For larger spacings, the capacities can be calculated using Terzaghi's equation. For closer spacings, failure surfaces overlap requiring adjustment of factors. Graphs show efficiency ratios that relate the actual capacity to isolated capacity depend on spacing and soil friction angle.

Case 2 (b): the center-to-center spacing of the two foundations (x = x2 < x1)

 Rankine passive zones just overlap, then the magnitude of qu will still be given by
Eq. (1).
 However, the foundation settlement at ultimate load will change (compared to
the case of an isolated foundation).
