ECE 123 Program Statement (5%)

Step 1: Find the program statement for your placement site.

Search for the program statement of your placement site either online or in hard copy. If you are not currently
enrolled in a placement this semester or are unable to access your placement site’s program statement, please
contact your professor. A program statement for a child care program will be randomly assigned to you. If you
prefer to have a hard copy of the program statement, please contact your professor by March 3 (a hard copy
will be provided to you in week 8).

Step 2: Idenfy the requirements from the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (CCEYA).
Locate where the following requirements outlined in the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (CCEYA) are
included in the program statement. Clearly indicate the corresponding numbers and underline relevant
informaon in the program statement. If you cannot find any of the specified requirements, please menon
this in your submission.
① consistent with Ontario’s policy statement on programming and pedagogy which names “How Does
Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years (2014)” as the document for guiding licensed child
care programs
② Reflect a view of children as being competent, capable, curious, and rich in potenal
③ Describe the goals that guide the program that promote the health, safety, nutrion and well-being of the
children
④ support posive and responsive interacons among the children, parents, child care providers and staff
⑤ encourage the children to interact and communicate in a posive way and support their ability to self-
regulate
⑥ foster the children’s exploraon, play and inquiry
⑦ provide child-iniated and adult-supported experiences
⑧ plan for and create posive learning environments and experiences in which each child’s learning and
development will be supported, and which is inclusive of all children, including children with individualized
plans
⑨ incorporate indoor and outdoor play, as well as acve play, rest and quiet me, into the day, and give
consideraon to the individual needs of the children receiving child care
⑩ foster the engagement of and ongoing communicaon with parents about the program and their children
⑪ involve local community partners and allow those partners to support the children, their families and staff
⑫ support staff, home child care providers or others who interact with the children at a child care centre or
home child care premises in relaon to connuous professional learning
⑬ document and review the impact of the strategies set out in clauses (a) to (j) on the children and their
families
⑭ Describe the approaches that will be implemented in the program to achieve the goals.
Step 3: Idenfy the images of the child, educator, families, and community.
Image of the Child
There are hundreds of different images of the child. Each one of you has inside yourself an image of the child
that directs you as you begin to relate to a child. This theory within you pushes you to behave in certain ways; it
orients you as you talk to the child, listen to the child, observe the child. Itis very difficult for you to act contrary
to this internal image. - Loris Malaguzzi

Review the program statement for words and phrases that depict how the program views children, educators,
families, and the community.
• Use green to circle (or highlight) the words/phrases describing the image of the child.
• Use red to circle (or highlight) the words/phrases describing the image of the educator.
• Use blue to circle (or highlight) the words/phrases describing the image of families and the community.

Step 4: Select one approach and illustrate its implementaon in the program.
Among the approaches that will be implemented in the program to achieve the goals (#14 from Step 2),
choose one approach. Think about a specific scenario illustrang how this approach could be integrated into
the program (e.g., during free play me, child-adult interacons, etc.). Draw this scenario and include it in your
submission.

Step 5: Submission

Format your submission however you want! If you used a hard copy of the program statement, please scan it
and include it in your submission. After reviewing the rubric to ensure that all the requirements are included,
submit your assignment in the Blackboard Submission Dropbox.
