CATCH-UP FRIDAY

SESSION 1
I. General Overview
Catch-up Subject: National Reading Program with Values, Health and Peace Grade 9
Education Integration Level:
Quarterly Theme: Community Awareness Sub-theme: Gratitude
(refer to Enclosure No. 3 of DM 001, s. 2024, Quarter 3) (refer to Enclosure No. 3 of DM 001, s. 2024, Quarter 3)

Time: 8:00am-11:30a.m to 1:00-2:00 p.m. Date: February 2, 2024

II. Session Outline
Session Title: Climate Change
Session At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
Objectives:
 Identify the cause and effects of climate change;
 Determine ways to mitigate climate change;
 Learn about facts on climate change through integrative activities; and
 Show gratitude to the natural environment through a nature walk activity.

Competency:
 Relate text content to particular social issues, concerns, or dispositions in real life. (EN9Rc-Iva-2.18)- ENGLISH
 Describe certain climatic phenomena that occur on a global level. (S9ES-IIIf-31)-SCIENCE
Enclosure No.3, DM #001, s. 2024

Key Concepts:  Climate change is a long-term shift in global or regional climate patterns. Often climate change refers
specifically to the rise in global temperatures from the mid-20th century to present.

 Climate change is the long-term alteration of temperature and typical weather patterns in a place.

 Some amount of climate change can be attributed to natural phenomena. Over the course of Earth’s
existence, volcanic eruptions, fluctuations in solar radiation, tectonic shifts, and even small changes in our
orbit have all had observable effects on planetary warming and cooling patterns.

 Scientists agree that human activity is the primary driver of what we’re seeing now worldwide. (This type
of climate change is sometimes referred to as anthropogenic, which is just a way of saying “caused by
human beings.”) The unchecked burning of fossil fuels over the past 150 years has drastically increased the
presence of atmospheric greenhouse gases, most notably carbon dioxide. At the same time, logging and
development have led to the widespread destruction of forests, wetlands, and other carbon sinks—natural
resources that store carbon dioxide and prevent it from being released into the atmosphere.

III. Teaching Strategies

Activity 2: Context Cluing:

Directions: Identify the meaning of the highlighted words using the context clues given. Find the
answers on the box below.

1. The way we use energy, cut down forests, and create pollution all add up to make the
Earth’s climate warmer.
2. These actions release greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, leading to a rise in global
temperatures and adverse effects on ecosystems.
3. It is crucial for us to understand the significance of climate change.
4. This means that the plants alter the ecosystem around them.
5. Climate change is caused primarily by human, activities, such as burning fossil fuels and
deforestation.

Activity 3: Reading A Text

Strategy:
 Oral Reading by Pair (Intervention)
 Silent Reading with small group discussion afterwards (Consolidation and
Enhancement Group)

Directions: Read the text below. Answer the comprehension questions that follow.

“Climate Change Needs to be Taken Seriously”

Climate change has become one of the most pressing issues of our time, and its effects are being
felt around the world. Scientists have found that people are making the Earth’s climate change
foster than it should. The way we use energy, cut down forests, and create pollution all add up to
make the Earth’s climate warmer. This is bad news for people and animals. As Grade 9 students,
it is crucial for us to understand the significance of climate change and the actions we can take
to reduce its impact. Otherwise, we will watch the planet gradually being destroyed.

Climate Change is caused primarily by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and
deforestation. These actions release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to a rise in
global temperatures and adverse effects on ecosystems. From extreme weather events rising sea
levels, the consequences of climate change are far-reaching and threaten our planet’s future.

Climate change causes more natural disasters, like floods and hurricanes. It also makes it harder
for people to get food and clean water. This can make people very sick and cause some to die.

We can help slow down climate change by using less energy and making sure the energy we do
use comes from clean sources, like solar or wind power. We can also help by planting more trees
and reducing pollution.

It’s important that we all work together to take care of the Earth and make sure it stays healthy
for many years to come. The Earth is our home. It is our only home and our only planet. There
are replacement planets. If the Earth is no longer fit to live in, we will not have elsewhere to go.
This is the reason why we as Grade 9 students need to add our voices to those who say that
climate change needs to be taken seriously.
Comprehension Questions:

Q1. Why does the writer say that climate change is “one of the most pressing issues of our time?”
Q2. Why does the writer refer to scientists in saying humans are causing climate change?
Q3. In your own little way, how can you address the issue on climate change?

(Teacher will reinforce the students’ learning by adding important details on the topic that would
wrap their understanding on the topic.)
Integration:

A. Infographic Data Interpretation (Intervention Group)- MATH/SCIENCE

Directions: Study the infographic chart below. Answer the questions that follow.
Questions:
1. What is the graphical information all about?
2. What is the intensity of the tropical cyclone “Kabayan”? What is the lowest intensity
recorded? How about the highest?
3. What is the direction of the wind?
4. What city found on the table has a closer proximity to Sapang Dalaga?

B. Picture Analysis-SCIENCE

Directions: Analyze the impact of climate change through observing the picture below. Then,
answer the question/s that follow/s.
Questions:
1. List down the effects of climate change on health based on the data presented in the above
infographic. (Intervention Group)
2. List down the ways on how to mitigate the effects of climate change. (Consolidation and
Enhancement Group)
3. How does the impact of climate change deteriorate health? (Enhancement Group)
4. List down the ways on how to mitigate the effects of climate change. (Enhancement
Group)
5. Imagine you are an environmentalist and you are to show your advocacy on the long-term
impact of the climate change on health through a slogan, what will it be? (Enhancement
Group)

C. Survey on Natural Disaster (Consolidation and Enhancement Group)-MATH/SCIENCE

Directions: Conduct a survey on the demographics of the enhancement students who have
experienced a natural disaster. Then, fill out the table with correct details and get the percentage
of the said survey. Use the percentage formula given below.
Survey Question: Which among the categorized natural disaster found on the table did the
SDNHS Grade 9 students mostly experienced?

A. Nature Walk (Values Integration-GRATITUDE)

Directions: Show appreciation and gratitude to the natural environment through a Nature
Valuing Walk Activity which will be recorded via video documentation. In this activity, students
are required to conduct an observation on the natural environment by strolling around the
school premise. The students are required to give descriptions on the part of the nature
that they take proud of in their video documentation.
Wrap Up 30 mins POST-READING Activity:
Drawing Activity: (Intervention Group)
Directions: Draw the part of the nature that you take proud of.

Journal Reflection Activity: Consolidation and Enhancement Group:

Directions: Write a reflection journal about how nature benefits humans and how are you going to
show gratitude and appreciation to the things that nature has offered to you.
