The first chapter of \"The Homework Machine\" introduces us to four unlikely friends: Brenton, Sam,
Judy, and Kelsey. These four fifth graders come from very different backgrounds and have very
different personalities, but they all share one thing in common – they hate doing homework.
Brenton is a genius who loves to invent things and has a knack for technology. Sam is a
troublemaker who loves to play pranks and is always getting into trouble. Judy is a straight-A
student who takes her schoolwork very seriously and is always trying to please her parents. Kelsey is
a free-spirited artist who would rather spend her time drawing than doing homework.
One day, Brenton comes up with an idea to create a machine that can do their homework for them.
He calls it the \"Dude Machine\" and convinces the other three to join in on his plan. They each have
their own reasons for wanting to use the machine – Brenton wants more time to work on his
inventions, Sam wants to avoid getting in trouble for not doing his homework, Judy wants to have
more time to spend with her friends, and Kelsey just wants to be able to focus on her art.
The four friends work together to build the machine, using Brenton's knowledge of technology and
Sam's skills at sneaking around to gather the materials they need. After some trial and error, they
finally have a working homework machine.
At first, everything seems to be going perfectly. The machine does their homework quickly and
accurately, and they have more free time to do the things they actually enjoy. But as they start to rely
more and more on the machine, they begin to realize that there may be consequences to their actions.
Will their secret be discovered? And if it is, what will happen to their friendship and their grades?
As the chapter ends, the four friends are faced with a decision – should they continue to use the
homework machine, or should they take responsibility for their own work? Only time will tell what
they will choose and what consequences they will face.
