EXPERIMENT NUMBER 4
TITLE OF EXPERIMENT : VOLUMETRIC DETERMINATION THE CONCENTRATION OF
NAOH AND Na2CO3 BY USING DOUBLE INDICATOR
ABSTRACT:
The experiment was determination the concentration of NaOH and Na2CO3 in the mixture by using
double indicator method NaOH and Na2CO3 were titrated by 0.2M of HCL were prepared by Measure
4.18mls of HCL than were puted in 250mls were for prepared solution than were titrated under P.O.P the
color were Changed from pink to colorless and were Completed the decomposition of Na 2CO3 because it
were give NaHCO3 decompose partially when using M.O the color was changed from Yellow to pale
pink.
AIM OF EXPERIMENT:
To determine the concentration of give solution of NaOH and Na2CO3 by using double indicator by
titration against a standard solution of HCL
THEORY OF HYPOTHESIS:
when HCL acid reacted with Na2CO3 Under P.O.P it decompose partially to produce of NaHCO3 and
when reacted with NaOH produce salt NaCL and water at under same time when added with M .O lead to
complete reaction between NaHCO3 and HCL to produce NaCL and water according to the following
chemical reaction
Consider a mixture of NaOH(aq) and Na2CO3 (aq). Reaction between HCl(aq) and Na2CO3 (aq) takes
place in two stages:
HCl(aq) + Na2CO3 (aq) NaHCO3(aq) + H2O(l) ...................... (1)
HCl(aq) + NaHCO3(aq) NaCl(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) ............. (2)
While that between HCl(aq) and NaOH(aq) completes in only one step:
HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) ............................. (3)

APPARATUS AND CHEMICALS:
Burette,
Pipette
Conical flask,
funnel
burette stand
dropper
HCL , NaOH, Na2CO3
P.O.P, M.O
PROCEDURE:
a) preparation of 4.4cm3 of 0.2M of HCL
Given:
Mw 36.5g/mol, density = 1.18. percentage 35.3%
Total volume(Vd) = 250cm3
From
d x % x 10
Mc =
Mw
1.18 x 35.3 x 10
=
36.5
=11.44 g/mol
Than
McVc = MdVd
MdVd
Vc =
Mc
3
0.2 X 250
Vc = = 4.4cm3
11.44
Therefore 4.4cm3 of concentrated HCl acid was measured and then 250cm3 of water were mixed together
so as to dilute until 0.2M of solution obtained
b) fill the solution of HCL into burette
c) pipette 25mls of mixture of NaOH and Na2CO3 into a conical flask and Were added three drops of
P.O.P indicator
d) titrated the mixture with standard solution of HCL solution from burette until pink color disappear
than were recorded the volume (V1) of consumed HCL
e) added 3 drops of M .O Orange indicator to the same mixture were continue the Titration until the
colors change from yellow to pale pink. Than were find the volume (V2) of the consumed acid in step
f) Repeated the procedure 1 to 3 until were obtain concordant than were tabulate result

OBSERVATION:
When HCL titrated with Na2CO3 under P.O.P into decompose partially to Produce NaHCO3 under the
same time reacted to NaOH to produce salt NaCl and water the color changed from pink to colorless to
4
complete the Decompose of NaHCO3 into NaCl and water by using M.O indicator due the colour change
from yellow to pale pink
DISCUSSION : In this experiment the Titration was involved strong acid HCL with double
Salt Na2CO3 and NaOH as were seen in procedure above, theoretical were
were given that while during an experiment occur due P.O.P are weak indicator
than M.O
CONCLUSION:
From the above experiment the neutralization reaction occur was formed after titrated HCL and NaOH
under P.O.P and between HCL titrated with NaHCO3 under M.O the hypothesis were prove because at
the end of Experiment
